In the US - what tech should I get?

Just picked up 3 pairs of Levis for $130, little bit cheaper than here but a much better selection of cuts and colours.

Wasn't massively enamoured due to the exchange rate at the moment. Far cry from the heady days of $2 to £1 back ten years ago.

i think the only possible explanation for that is i think some American schools have a marksmanship team in the same way they'd have a football or baseball team, and the ad is for target rifles.

Yea some things are just a lot cheaper there. But they don't have to list prices with the tax included in a lot of places which can catch you out :/

Clothing tends to be better, or at least it was when I went over. In the UK we get a lot of badly made crap from places like Bangladesh now, which you have to actively avoid buying.

Actually i believe Walmart have admitted it was a joke and a bad one that they regret. This said, who knows what news article is true nowadays?

A work mate of mine went with his wife - at end of holiday they binned everything they took - even the suitcases - They had what they stood up in- They then got two new cases and loaded the stuff he had ordered before he went - Two Chevy big block heads -cams- valves and springs -con rods and bearings and pistons and other bits I have forgotten -He paid £1k import duty but saved more than that. He has or had a red Ford Consul 375 dragster. - Last I heard he rebuilt it road legal but never saw it as I had retired by then and lost touch.

Well well - I found him - That car has changed a lot since last saw it.

Lets be real, tech can be 'cheaper' but where things are normally concerned it is only in the region of 10% (which is mainly due to taxation). You need to remember you never get the base exchange rate and you loose a few % there and all prices in the US are before sales tax which is 8-10% where anyone actually wants to visit (compared to 20% VAT).

Outside of any special offers or supply/demand issues you have to spend a lot of money to make any significant savings. There are issues like I would NOT give up a UK keyboard for a 10% saving. You have warranty issues to think about.

There are bigger savings to be had elsewhere such as fashion, peanut butter M&M's etc. etc.

I've picked up things like Etnies and Vans shoes for $10.

You'll be in for a nasty surprise if you use the info in that link as a guide. TX, where I live, is listed at 6.25% and I pay 8 to 8.25% routinely in the DFW area.

In addition to the state tax rate you have to account for the city tax rate.... and each city can be different. There are about 15 to 20 cities that make up the DFW metroplex.

Trying to shop cities for the cheapest tax rate is pointless for the most part. Doesn't help you if they have a lower tax rate but no business that sells what you want.

They didn't seem prticulaly accurate, but it gives a reasonable indication of the extra costs.

I visit the US a couple of times a year usually with work (my trip in May/June was for a family vacation).

Everything seems way cheaper to me, and I usually do a mountain of shopping when I go (clothes, trainers)

In respect of tech I havent bought anything with a plug on it yet, its usually PC accessories and components but the only issue I can think of would be the difference in the plug draw from the wall.

There are step downn adapters for that kind of thing though.

The vast majority of tech now works with variable voltages so unless you're looking for something like a kettle it'll be fine. That includes pretty much everything from computers to TVs, so just changing the plug (swap out the kettle/figure 8 lead) or using a boggi standard plug converter is fine.

I doubt that's true, and I certainly haven't heard it. WalMart has been running it's back to school 'like a hero' campaign for a few weeks now for everything from clothes to supplies etc.... I think this was just a mistake... a stupid mistake but just a mistake.

There may be some private schools that have a marksmanship team, but I've never heard of a public school that has one. Even Jr. ROTC members use dummy rifles.

Most everything that would involve a firearm is handled outside of school through private organizations.

Thanks all :) Looks like by and large tech is out. Will focus on clothes etc. (and the guns/nuclear launch codes and what not*)

*If the NSA is reading this, i'm not serious. Please don't arrest me. Got work to do.

Regarding the Walmart gun display, i think the suggestion is that a customer moved it as a prank, In this social media age of course it immediately went online and Walmart had to apologize.
