In Theaters | On HBO Max | Exact Same Day )

The problem with home streaming is it will kill the film industry.. If you can have a steam online to watch a film legally. There will be an illegal copy within an hour.
If its a pay per view payment like a boxing match then a lot of people will be dishonest, however if the film is part of their current package, like Netflix films then people will come continue paying the subscription.

Only way I see it working is if one streaming service becomes a monopoly that we all pay for.

I have a feeling that they are going to have to find a way because I dont think cinema going is going to return to normal, like the high street its been slowing dying for a number of years and the lockdowns have just pushed them even further to the grave

I'm not really a fan of the Cinema experience tbh. You can't pause the movie when you pop to the toilet for one.

Cinema also attracts too many idiots in my experience who will happily ruin it for others, so I stopped going a while back.

Whether the capacity to support 9 streaming is there though, I don't think it is, will surely determine whether cinema will survive. I know people subbed to streaming services who download content offered by these services from elsewhere, simply because streaming quality is flaky and unpredictable, even on fast connections.

The cost of seeing these premiers at home is already(& will be) at a premium cost too eg. itunes 4khdr tenant $20(£20?), equal to a couple of off-peak cineworld tickets,
I thought disney premiers were equally expensive.
So production/distribution companies could still be financing those billion$ movies, having cut-out the middleman.

Cinema also attracts too many idiots
still cued up "God Bless America (2011)" - Cinema Scene

I'm all for home cinema but some films just have to be seen on the largest screen possible.

Seeing Interstellar at the cinema was an experience i'll always remember.

I'm in two minds about this, I prefer watching most films in the comfort of my own home since I've bought a decent setup. Now and again though the cinema is a must for certain titles. If the streaming figures are through the roof for the likes of HBO and Disney, then I can't see cinemas lasting much longer.

I think times have changed from people having tiny little TVs in their houses. These days some pretty hefty setups aren’t all that expensive, even less so when you factor in the ridiculous cost of the big screen. I’d much rather stay at home for most films with just the odd film watched in the biggest imax screens.

Agreed. And to the above, plenty of people have the money etc for a large setup but simply don't have the space. I would have bought a massive TV and atmos speaker setup had I not live in a 2 bedroom flat with only an open plan lounge/kitchen area (very nice though it is).

It seems WB have no way of getting these movies direct to consumer outside of North America is that right? They just announced HBO Max will be coming to Europe in middle 2021, and the only way to stream WW84 at home will be via Sky a month after release. To me, that just screams piracy ruining their income outside of NA. Seems like a big mistake.

Managed to jump through some hoops and get a 6 month HBO Max subscription for $69.99 that works fine on my Chromecast 4k/HDR model (the one with Google TV and the remote)

Had to use a VPN and a prepaid American debit card.

Did it mainly for the movies to be honest, though it looks like there might be some good shows there

I learned in the news that Warner Bros. has decided to release “Dune” on HBO Max at the same time as our theatrical release, using prominent images from our movie to promote their streaming service. With this decision AT&T has hijacked one of the most respectable and important studios in film history. There is absolutely no love for cinema, nor for the audience here. It is all about the survival of a telecom mammoth, one that is currently bearing an astronomical debt of more than $150 billion. Therefore, even though “Dune” is about cinema and audiences, AT&T is about its own survival on Wall Street. With HBO Max’s launch a failure thus far, AT&T decided to sacrifice Warner Bros.’ entire 2021 slate in a desperate attempt to grab the audience’s attention.

Villeneuve isn't happy and he's not wrong, here is a well thought out response to the decision to put all next years big releases on HBO Max. I'll also openly admit to being biased as i've got high hopes for Dune.

A lot of that debt is because they paid $108 billion for Time Warner.

Which would have been a good purchase at the time, but then the pandemic has decimated movie studios profits.

Cinema should be the ultimate movie goers experience.

Too many idiots these days talking throughout the entire film, or sat munching through two mega large popcorns.

Straight to streaming platforms please.

I'm more engrossed in a film watching on an OLED with high quality headphones than I am sat in a cinema.

Yes, but it's a bit more complicated than that.

I subscribe to pretty much every streaming platform going. Netflix, Prime, Disney, NowTV, Hulu with HBO and had a free trial of CBS yet in some cases I still torrent. Think back to the days of napster and limewire.
Sometimes it takes a large amount of illegal activity to drive industry change.

It doesn't take a genuis to figure out why bluray won over hd-dvd.....it's well documented online and "illegal" activity played a part. It was the straw which broke the camels back.

I pay for disney, yet still downloaded the mandalorian due to the stupid release schedule.

Not everyone who downloads is doing so because they don't want to pay.

This. I can watch a movie on my OLED in 4k HDR and Dolby Atmos in the comfort of my own home with no idiots in the room disturbing me. Cinema is obsolete.

I watched engame at the cinema. Three young lads sat next to me talking throughout. Next day I downloaded a cam copy and had more enjoyment from that, than I did in the cinema. Not to mention it cost me about £20 with the IMAX tickets.

I've got 4k OLED and a decent 7.1 surround system, space around the speakers and dead centre seating position... but I cannot wait for the cinemas to re-open. Even with the idiots I feel more immersed in the cinema experience where I am there to sit and watch a film than I do at home. I do use my home setup often and love it, but it's not the cinema.
