So after months of not making my mind up and getting annoyed at mad car prices, I have taken the plunge and bought something that isn't a Porsche but is German.

3K Miles
V10 Plus
All the bits
Red

Not mine yet, but deal done yesterday and should collect this week/weekend. Will add more when I have time and forgive the self congratulatory incoming thread, but it's been emotional....though I appreciate this now makes 2 of these on this forum, but mine is better (IT JUST IS!!).

After my last Audi rolling road disaster (377bhp) in the RS4, I won't be putting this on the rollers but having said that, it does feel 550PS this time....and then some.

Very nice :).

As a big Porsche fan, how's it like to drive?

It's not GT3 sharp, few cars are and I have only driven 50 miles in it on a road test and don't have the car yet, but it was sharper than I recall them. It is very much quicker than the V8, massively so and being a PS it is lower, stiffer, with more feelsome steering but need time in the car to provide any meaningful comparison.

Disappointing to not see you back in a Porsche.

Ideally GT3 was the place I wanted to be and after my mate chose to take the GT4 I had earmarked (I don't blame him one bit) the reality was I would need to spend 110K to 150K to get in the right spec of those cars today which frankly is too much.

So I pondered a GTS and that really was 2nd prize and then started looking at Macca's and 458's with the mindset of 140K will get me in something I feel warrants that price tag. Then I saw this come up (contact at Audi) who said this is the one, get down, drive it, not on sale yet, but great car, looks/feels new and I did....and bought it.

Day in the life of.

It actually looks really good in the flesh and stands out. Yea it's a shouty colour, but it's a V10 sports car, so red is fair play in my book.

V8 held zero appeal. Too slow for the car, crap engine that sounds nice but struggles to get out of the way of itself on the straight bits.

:D

Sorry but always thought the Audi R8 was the epitome of "poor mans Porsche / Ferrari / Lamborghini / Whatever"

Your hardly poor but I'm disappointed given your previous steeds.

Still, nice car, I wouldn't be crying in my Coco pops if it was mine!

Each to their own old boy. I'm happy with my purchase and that's all that matters. :)

This "X is poor man's Y" quotation is often spouted by people that haven't driven X or Y, and can probably afford neither.

Now now it's just opinions and they never hurt anyone and we all have them. Perceptions can be misleading but I had my GT3 9 years ago and I'm older now too and you know what, badges and brands were something I worried about in my 20's, not in my 40's. I've never sought advice really on here, but always interested to read people's opinions.

Driven both coupe and roadster yes. Just not in the same ballpark as a 991/997 handling wise, and I'm guessing the R8 too. Also I'm going to assume Housey wanted something NA which is why he stumped up so much for one of these rather than a 911 Turbo, or less for a GTS, which obviously wasn't special/powerful enough for him.

Turbo S was on the list but epic and quick as that is, I felt the V10 was such a special engine it made the R8 more of an event. The GTS I felt was lovely but again the R8 felt more special. I don't care one jot about the image or how its perceived same as with a Boxster. In Plus form it brings a sharper steer, stiffer set up and on my short drive it gave me confidence to push on early in the drive. I want a special car and the V10 married to a superb all rounder gives me a get up at 5 and drive to Wales car. Yea I'd take a GT3 over it, but not at 50k more.

Housey

Something I did not mention, did you not consider maybe an F-Type R Coupe in either RWD or AWD as an option?

Either way the V10 R8 when I drove one briefly I thought was rather incredible, the way it could just pull from 2000rpm and scream all the way to insane RPM, power, torque everywhere and so damn smooth with it.

Enjoy it mate, they are pretty perfect out the box, but at this kind of money I'd have found a year or two old F-Type R Coupe also a very appealing option.

Respect Jags, make a superb range of cars but for me they don't get the juices flowing. Not driven the R Coupe but don't really want to which is cutting my nose off to spite my face I guess.

Epic. I drove one of the v10 plus around the Milbrook alpine circuit last year. Felt awesome

Looks nice in red !

I drove a Nova SRi around there when most of the forum were in nappies. Not the same but still one of my most memorable early driving memories. Fantastic course though I did get kicked off the bowl after the Nissan Rally Team complained about some idiot youth in a Carlton 24v flashing them out of the way at a 150mph approach speed.....3 times. Red flag, please leave now.

True that.
