Inconsistent backlighting?

I'm talking about laptops, but I guess it applies to all monitors. How can you prove inconsistent back lighting? I realise some people don't mind minor imperfections on screen, and probably don't notice them, but I've always been very picky about it. I've recently got a 17" desktop replacement, and there's very slight shadow in one corner. Its at the borderline of what I consider acceptable, only an IQ fascist (you know who you are) would even detect it. I could probably live with it though its that borderline.

What do we all think about it.

I'm one of the fussiest people around I'd say, I'm about to buy a 22" tft and if it is not PERFECT I will be replacing it, especially after this company (NOT OCUK) have ****** me around and I have been without a monitor for 4 months now.

I don't think such a thing as a perfect screen exists. My 2007WFP is a higher quality screen than most (maybe all) of the 22"ers, yet it still has a few minor issues, inlcuding a slightly uneven backlight and slight VGA noise. Plus all LCD PC monitors have a relatively poor black depth, they all look a little fuzzy out of their native resolution, many of them aren't good with movie playback, and even the VX922 (the quickest TFT around) probably suffers a bit of ghosting/texture blur if you know how to spot it.

Buy one expecting perfection and you're only setting yourself up for dissapointment. Accept that they may have a few minor flaws and you have a good chance of getting a screen you can be happy with.

I've a few screens around the place and I've been going around comparing them. As you say most of them aren't perfect, with some shadowing here and there but what I've noticed is that the one I have a problem is pretty much very good all over except one corner and its this more pronounced difference from one corner to the others that is bothering me. Basically its more distracting than the others.

Ironically of all the screens I have access to, the cheapest screen is the best quality, no shadowing and evenly lit. its also the smallest screen.

For Windows uneven backlight doesn't really matter imo, it's mainly for gaming (ie FEAR) and video playback. My Philips backlight is pretty uneven the corners are far brighter. Overall the grey levels are pretty poor because the backlight is fixed level.

Is a slightly uneven backlight grounds for an RMA after you have owned a monitor for a year? My Eizo is ever so slightly uneven, although it does not bother me. You only notice on an all black screen, and even then you have to look for it. What does bother me EXTREMELY though is the one stuck pixel I have. They won't accept it back for just one pixel though. Has to be atleast 3. I'm looking for legitimate reasons to send it back so they will give me a new one. Anyone know how to break an LCD monitor without it looking deliberate...? ;)
