which of the parts in my PC would be the most effective to upgrade?

CPU: FX 4100 quad core @ 3.6GHz
8GB 1333MHz RAM
1TB HDD
Radeon 6450 GPU

I'm thinking it's most likely my graphics card...

(I prefer not having my settings turned down)

Time to beef up the GPU, but it also depends on the PSU you have as well. CPU will be fine for now, maybe even overclock it if you can.

A 7850 and CPU overclock would be good for now. The next step from there would be to get an i5. I know, it means a new motherboard as well but you will possibly find yourself wanting to upgrade quicker if you got a Piledriver (for example). Basically, all I'm saying is that the i5 will probably last you longer, but will cost more cash in the short term; however it could save money in the long term.

that cpu aint great either... its pretty much q6600?
The FX-4100 at 3.6GHz is around the speed of a Q6600 at 3.0-3.2GHz.

If the OP had no plan on upgrading his CPU/platforum in the near future, he would be better off looking at 2nd graphic cards...probably pick up a 6850/5850/GTX470 between £50-£60 than to spend £150 on a 7850, as the CPU would bottleneck a 7850 quite hugely anyway.

This would be your best upgrade:

YOUR BASKET
1 x HIS HD 7950 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (H795F3G2M) £220
1 x Plextor M5 Pro 128GB Extreme Series Solid State Drive - (PX-128M5P) £99.95
Total : £331.34 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Or, if you can push for the Gigabyte Model, you get UK RMA:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte ATi Radeon HD 7950 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £239.99
1 x Plextor M5 Pro 128GB Extreme Series Solid State Drive - (PX-128M5P) £99.95
Total : £351.34 (includes shipping : £9.50).

He might then need a better PSU for dual cards, he would be better getting a 7850 +

Ok, thanks for the info. Would just upgrading my GPU to something like a 7770 be a good idea, because I don't really have the money to be upgrading all the parts.

+1 on 7850 and overclock the fx4100. Exactly what I have, plus a decent overclock on the 7850 and I get 50fps+ on BF3, Bioshock, Tomb Raider with high to very high settings.
