Increasing memory in my macbook

OK, so my macbook I brought like 2 months ago and it has 1gb of ram with the 2.16 ghz processor. I have a single stick on DDRII 1gb memory, will this fit my macbook or is the current config a 2 x 512 party?
 
Search the forums.. plenty of posts about MacBook compatibility.

It has to be DDR2 667MHz SO-DIMM RAM.. chances are, it will work so long as there's room.

Easy enough to pop the RAM cover off (won't void the warranty). I suspect it's a dual set of 512's in there now though.
 
What DDR2 RAM have you got?

Make sure it's a SoDIMM 667MHz (PC2-5300) RAM, then it'll work - you can either remove 1 of the 512 and thus increase memory to 1.5GB RAM (but not dual channel as they're not matched/same memory) or remove both 512 sticks and have just 1GB RAM stick in (and buy another matching 1 to dual-channel to 2GB)
 
You are correct, both slots are indeed filled. Would there be much point in adding an extra 512 then? Would 1.5gb make any change?
 
If you're using intensive apps then I'd say go for the extra 512MB.

Whether or not it makes a performance difference is debateable, and mostly down to "am I willing to fork out for the extra space : performance gain" ratio you experience.
 
Macbook requires you have two matched pairs, I dealt with a customer the other day who had a 256 and 1024 chip which caused them all sorts of shutdown issues. I would strongly advise against installing unmatched pairs. Also remember to check your apple warranty because you may invalidate your warranty if your not careful.
 
In regards to the unmatched RAM, stick it in. If it works fine then its all good. If things start screwing up (unlikely but possible) you can almost certainly blame the RAM and just take it out again. If youre worried just do a full system backup before trying.

As far as I know changing the configuration of the RAM does not invalidate your warranty. However, I always keep my old stick just in case the computer needs to be returned to Apple (I switch out the new RAM before taking it back).
