How can I get my press-up count above 60? Currently I can do about 50 without stopping, but I want more.

I'm currently doing sets of 30-40-30 quite rapidly. Would I be better doing less but more slowly? Or, should I do 30, then go for max, then another 30?

Which is the best way?

I used to do a quick set then a slow set then another quick set. At one point I was doing that one day, then 100 slow ones the day after. Rotating that way.

They never did much for me I must admit.

I can only do about 20! How do i get up to 50 monkeypants!? :p
A combination of bench press drop-sets and normal press-ups. I used to go to my maximum every day, which I've stopped doing now.

You've got to be determined, and even when you think you can't do anymore, you can because it's mostly in your head for the first few.

I agree with that. It also goes with other forms of training too. The reps at the end of whatever you're doing, or the last 50 yards hard running/rowing are worth 3 or 4 times the start of your training IMO.

Put some weights in a bag and stick it on your back, then try and do fifty. Do that for a few weeks, then try doing more than 50 without the weights. :)

I am in the same sort of situation, I can do 50, but 100+ would be nice.

I think the weighted bag idea may work, along with bench press, incline bench press, shoulder press, etc. as these are muscles used (I think :o).

Add 5 to your routine evry 5 days and make yourself do it. Have one day off to rest and ten continue. I think most people can get to about 200 comfortably. Used to pump about 75 in a minute in the good old days a few years ago.

i bet most people cannot even do 10.

To be honest I struggle to pump out 20.

It's really strange... for my size I'd say I'm pretty strong and when I've compared what I lift to others in the gym, I'm up there with them. I just can't do press-ups.. :(

How much weight should I start with? 4kg?

Start with 5kg, then gradually move it up to 10kg over the space of a week. Also how many times a week do you do them? I get the impression you do them every day.

I do them every day, well, I might have one day off them a week, but my muscles feel like they want to do them every day so I do.
I'll start with 5kg today, and see how many I can do, then go from there.

I usually do 10 explosive pushups, where my hands come off the ground and then straight into 10 normal pushups. The normal ones are a bit slower than normal. Then I go straight into 5 explosive than 5 normal. I do 3 sets of those.

I also wear body armour with the plates in which adds about 20lbs, I think.

I also bought some pushup handles so that I get the full range of motion.

Also start increasing your reps. Dont stop at 50, go up to 55 then 60 then 65 etc

Interesting. I can't do them much at the moment since I put my shoulder out and I can only do them very slowly/carefully, which isn't much use. I was wondering though how you'd move onto one armed pushups? Even if you could do 100 or whatever normal ones the single arm ones are quite different arn't they?
