New Delhi

Formula One racing is forever on the move and in 2011 ventures east yet again for the inaugural Indian Grand Prix. In light of recent F1 successes in Korea and Singapore, India - and more specifically its capital city New Delhi - is the latest Eastern powerhouse to welcome the paddock with open arms. After learning plenty of lessons from hosting the 2010 Commonwealth Games, New Delhi plans to wow the international sporting stage once more with its first race in October.

A brand new circuit has been built to the south of the city in the suburb of Noida. The track, designed by renowned circuit architect Hermann Tilke, stretches to 5.137-kilometres and is expected to seat up to 150,000 spectators. Two sizable straights and an interesting mix of corners should guarantee a track full of challenges for drivers and engineers alike.

In an interesting move, organisers also consulted several of the Formula One teams before construction began in earnest. The track design was run in various factory simulators and as a result several amendments were made in an effort to boost overtaking for the drivers - and excitement for the fans.

Four million cubic tons of earth was moved to give the track plenty of undulation, and it rises 14 metres between Turns One and Three alone. Inspiration has also been drawn from rival venues' best features, with Turkey's infamous Turn Eight inspiring a double-apex corner, slightly banked, which forms part of a 'mini-arena' which alone will accommodate 13,000 spectators.

The earthworks for the circuit were finished ahead of India's 2010 monsoon season and the track was officially opened on October 18, 2011, just under two weeks before its inaugural Grand Prix.

Circuit information

Circuit Name: Buddh International Circuit
Number of Laps: 60
Circuit Length: 5.137 km
Race Distance:
Lap Record:

Mercedes said:
Initial simulation suggests that the cars will spend around 65% of the lap at full throttle, with the longest full throttle period of 14.5 seconds, between turns three and four.

The cars will exceed 285kph (177mph) at three points around the lap, while the fastest corner is expected to be turn 12, which is expected to be taken at 255kph. The maximum G-loading around the circuit is expected to be 4.0G, at turns five, nine and eleven. [...]

The circuit has similarities to [Istanbul Park in] Turkey, with a long main straight and a very long, sweeping corner (turns ten and eleven) that resembles the triple-apex turn eight in Turkey. However, while turn eight was taken with an average corner speed of 270kph, in India the corners are expected to be taken at 170 kph (turn ten) and 210kph (turn eleven) respectively. The lap time and speed will be very much dependent on the grip level achieved by the Pirelli tyres on the new asphalt surface.

A lap time of 1:25.000 would correspond to an average lap speed of 218kph, while a lap time of 1:30.000 would equate to an average lap speed of 205kph.

No prizes for guessing where the DRS will go :)

I'm with Duke, on F1 2011 this is a good track. Not entirely convinced it portrays the ciruit acurately though, as in the game I am able to go from turn 6 to turn 15 without braking, only lifting off a bit. :D

Should be a good race, with no team orders to mess things up, a new track so nobody has an advantage, and a lot of drivers out to prove a point. Cant wait.

Don't think I will be getting up for P1 though :)

Edit: Just noticed the random times, New Dehli is 5:30 ahead of us, so session times for us will be half past something.

Chandhok only taking part in FP1.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/15434017.stm

Shame, I thought he deserved to race in his home GP, would have been some nice extra publicity for Lotus. I don't see really what he wouldn't have been able to do that Trulli could?

Bring in money? I can't imagine Chandhok has anywhere near the sponsorship Trulli does, otherwise he would be in that seat permanently.

Remember, F1 is a business, you can't just do what's nice if it doesn't bring in the cash.

A shame for Chandhok though. Karthikeyan on the other hand is racing for HRT.

Really looking forward to this weekend, track itself looks promising.

HRT seem to have quite a light hearted view on their driver swap for the weekend:

Shame Chandhok doesn't get a race seat this weekend.

Yea it is a shame for Chandhok, no doubt he will be kept busy doing a lot of media over the weekend. Hopefully he will be on R5L for the Practices he isn't involved in too.

Edit: ^^ What on Earth is that! :D HRT have their own cartoons :p

Been practicing this as well on F1 2011. I think the left right of 6 and 7 is my favourite corner.

Also:

Rubens Barrichello, Williams
"I have never been to India and as the circuit is new I have been preparing by playing my home simulator to get to know the track. I am very much looking forward to this race as it will be different to other weekends in terms of culture. I have always wanted to go to India, so this is a great opportunity for me to get to know the country as well as do what I love at the same time: drive a Formula One car."

I wonder if he's bought F1 2011 as well!

He is know to play rFactor and Iracing, so he might just have some mods for that, or taken home some of Williams simulator code :p

I'm in the poor camp of not having played F1 2011, but I have a lot of hope for this track. The layout looks great and the pictures make it look very cool. Love the way turn 1 up to 3 looks from the main grandstand. Hopefully it'll be an overtaking heaven like they promise. :)

New Delhi plans to wow the international sporting stage once more with its first race in October.

Really, they wowe dig the first time, I don't think so. I doubt they will wow people this time either.

Looks an interesting track though. No work this weekend but off to London instead, so will miss all of it.

Shame Chandhok doesn't get a race seat this weekend.

Trulli can actually outpace Kov occasionally (and both are past race winners) while Chandhok was busy spinning off at every opportunity and looking worse than Ricardo Rosset...

No brainer really. Vijay Mallya at Force India wasn't going to hire Karthikeyan or Chandhok because of nationality, he said he's only interested in drivers that make the grade pace-wise.
