Industries and long work cycle patterns

Which industries out there are well known for letting you work on a long-cycle rota pattern? eg: 4 weeks on, 4 weeks off?

I know the O&G industry does this but it seems extremely difficult to get into unless you know someone.

Has anyone else done this, and which industry did you go into? Is it a viable move for someone in IT Support or Engineering? I miss shift pattern work, but I really don't ever want to go back to doing nights.

I know one guy who does some sort of pattern like that 5weeks on 5 weeks back in the UK IIRC - IT/Comms work for an oil company in Iraq.

I've been thinking that I want long periods off so I can more spend time on my hobbies. Most of my mates are settled down and under the thumb so the social aspect is no biggie.

dowie - any idea how he got into that sector? I'm in networks/comms myself.
