inel 2.8 (ht) vs AMD 64bit 3000+

Well, I would say like others. Depends what you are using it for.

Games = Athlon 64. The only time the p4 may stand a chance (depending on what speed the p4 is, 533 800 or what) is programs like adobe premiere and other applications that make use of multithreaded.

Otherwise, the venice should be a bit quicker.

at the moment, the p4 2.8 I use in my workstation running xp pro and it runs oblivion on a nvidia 6200 (640x480) ok. the amd is sitting in the server running 2003 server and not donig much.

the p4 has 1gb of ddr2 ram to play with, the A64 has 512mb of pc2700 to play with.

would i see any improvements in using the A64 with it's 512mb ram over the p4 + ddr2 while playing oblivion, or should i stick with what i have and go get an xbox 360 instead???

cheers

They would be better suited to each other’s tasks really!

The P4 would be better in the server, the AMD in the games PC

The problem is that the AMD PC is lacking in ram - it could do with at least 1GB really

If you're considering an XBox 360 spend the money on a top end graphics card like a 7800/7900/X1800/X1900 and upgrade the ram to 2GB (in your AMD PC and make the P4 a server). This will give your PC a huge boost

The A64 3000+ is traditionally a great clocker so I'd consider clocking it too

tbh you won't do too well with oblivion due to your current graphics card whichever processor you use, although the AMD would be preferable. The 360 is a consideration but you'll need to run it through a monitor or HDTV to get the most out of it's next gen abilities.

You could always buy a new mobo for your amd chip and a better Graphics card, you'd probably be able to configure a system for not a great deal more money than the cost of a 360 as you already have some parts that could be migrated.

not if its 754 or an earlier 939 ;)

why not ask the OP then? and give him some advice, rather than being a winking smartarse. :p

it's a 754... ;)

ok so basically what your all saying is:

1. p4 = server a64=games/work.
2. more ram for the a64 + a better graphics card.

OK, thanks for the pointers :)

My Winnie 3000 (939), one of those "old" 939 chips hits 2.4Ghz on stock volts. Don't discount chips just because they arn't the latest and greatest. Even a 754 3000 will have plenty of power once you get it 1-2GB of RAM and a decent graphics card.

Dont discount older stuff?

No, thats so true

Among my own best PCs are a P4 3.6 with 2GB RAM, and I have tried and tried to get it to play games like the AMDs and I am still not at all impressed... Even this so called encoding is a fair bit slower, or at least converting AVI and VCD to DVD using TMPGEnc is poor on the intel and the AMDs are pretty much 5 times faster ( 10-12 minutes on AMD, just under an hour with the P4 )

The best speed I have had with older AMDs are 3.0Ghz on an XP1700, 2.9 on an XPM2500, and 3.0 on a Winchester... All of which absolutely kill the P4

Will the RAM from your Intel go into the AMD?

Will the GFX Card?

To be totally honest mate, I have avoided using Intel for some years, I only got the P4 cos it was a steal ( Not literally ) and I certainly have no intention of EVER getting another one... Its a pile of junk. I have a Smepron3100 thats better at pretty much everything than this Pentium.

I would swap them over now, accept that for a while you will lsoe a little bit of speed, but then concentrate on getting that AMD sorted... The end will be a grin so wide, your head will fall off!!!

Nope the ram will not fit into the a64 motherboard, it's ddr2 which won't fit

not to worry though, I'll just get 2gb of the right ram and go from there.

Yes the gfx card will fit, shame it's just a pci card, but then i can always upgrade that too.

Problem really is that the p4 machine is really just used for work stuff, web design, oblivion is only a half hour distraction here and there between work.

DDR2? - I suppose in some ways, my P4-3.6 is DDR not DDR2 and I have tons of PC3200 so that sorted me out on that.

PCI - Oh yeah, didnt think on that one.

Well, GFX Cards are dirt cheap these days... Hell, even an MX440 can run a surprising ammount of games.... UT2004 plays well enough on one FFS!

@ Robdav

I have a 2.8HT at work and my old A64 3000 (S754) with the same amount of ram was faster in Photoshop. normal Windows tasks they were both much the same. Funnily enough I don't play games at work to test there.

not much in it TBH.

But then... the p4 is in a hp business SFF pc and therefore not much chance of upgrading it. the a64 is in a standard atx type case so I have more upgrading options.

anyway, thanks for all the replies.
