i goto Uni an hour a way, and i live here not at home, i still think im living the "real" Uni life though, as long as its not the same city and your living with some mates i think you'll still get the benfit, and its less hassle if you do need to get home / moving stuff :)

As yes, also as above, more important than anything else is that you chose the best course for you. I didn't limit myself to just Uni's near me, I also applied to the University of Surrey and to UEA, but in the end when I got my offers back and my results decided Loughborough offered the best course for me.

I'd go far enough away that you're parents cant 'pop in' unannounced. The last thing you want is them popping in when you're popping in (to a sexeh student...)....

Depends on your parents I guess, but despite being only 50 miles away, mine have never visited unless invited, and even then it's only once or twice a year (to help me pack up all my stuff and move it back home at the end of the year etc).

Ok, I had the choice of going to Reading Uni (30 minute bike ride) or Sheffield Hallem uni. (6 hour drive).

I had enough pts to go to both, but I went to Reading. From my point of view, these are my advantages.

1: I never have to pay for food, rent, and all the other costs of living away from home offer.
2: I dont need to do laundry, dishes, cook food, Clean kitchen etc etc
3: As my parents paid for the majority of my brothers uni costs (he went away for uni), They offered to pay for my entire tution fees.
4: I will come out of Uni, with NO debt. In fact, as i stayed home, i have kept my saturday job and Im actually earning money rather than losing it.
5: I am getting pretty fit from all the cycling. :D

I guess the downsides are that I dont go out partying with people from halls ( I dont like it anyway). If i did want to go however, I could. (with friends on my course)

My POV anyways :)

It was the reason that I applied to Aberystwyth, I ended up falling in love with the place. I've only been home once and that was during christmas. I've found that the people who were most home sick were going home every weekend as it was within driving distance.

I'm sorry but you're missing out a huge chunk of your first year by writing off the value of living in hall.

I think im actually being petty deciding this becuase some people come from foreign countries, so distance isn't going to be an issue

as long as you arent living at home it doesnt matter, make up your mind more on what course you want to do - who offers this course - who is the best at said course.

Reading was my insurance choice but I thought that would be too close to home so I really didn't want to go there even if I didn't get my first choice. But luckily I did so here I am in Bristol :D The thing is Bristol is less than 2 hours drive away from home but I definately don't feel like I'm too close to home. I haven't visited home once during term time, although I did have to take a train through Reading to visit friends at UEA.

One piece of advice I can give is make sure you end up in proper halls of residence rather than a student house. I live somewhere that isn't really proper halls and the atmosphere just isn't the same. Still made some great friends here though!

Also when making your choices don't take where your friends are going into consideration at all. Four of my friends are all at the same uni but they all chose that place for the right reasons. They just all happened to make the same choice.
