Being a student I can't afford many games so having good knowledge of mods and indie games can allow me to save a couple of euro without getting a craving for some games. I am also a big fan of chess albeit I suck at the game but enjoy it none the less. I found the coolest little game that has that addictive quality of just one more go that seems to ruin people social lives. Anyway the game is called Dicewars but before I give you the link I just wanted to say that I heard a quote many of you already know.

"Anyone can make something bigger and more complex, to do the opposite requires a touch of genius"

This is becoming the golden rule of games and technology and I think it sums this game to a "Why didn't I think of that?". The game is amazingly simple and you will pick it up immediately without having to have 4 years of Civ in your gaming resume but less of my rambling. Heres the link.
Dicewars

Let me know what you think? I think it's a little easy but hey think of it as a confidence booster.

I can see this becoming a little cult game! Everybody should give it a shot particularly if you enjoy any strategy game including chess.

Played it a while ago.. good game.. but soon becomes repetitive.. so what do you do? Add more facets to the game to increase longevity and neutralise its simple aspects or just let it continue to be enjoyed by new people until it finally runs out of wanting players? Thats where companies have no choice.. so while simple may be ingenius.. it certainly isnt the answer.

Good Lord! You come across as very negative. It is by no means a new form of chess but considering it's free at least a handfull of hours of amusment can be gotten from the game which is amazing for a small indie game as some games currently going 60 Euro on store shelves wouldn't keep me going for more than an hour. And a boring hour at that.

Whats lacking is the human element. Ever play chess against a computer or Counter Strike against bots? It's terrible. Some games need to be played against people where the game provides the tools. Dicewars is such a game. Multiplayer could easily be set up and it would become much more enjoyable.

My games always go something like this:

Two 'powerhouses' form and gobble up everyone except for me and a one or two other teams.

One powerhouse dies out totally. It basically ends up with me as one superpower, one enemy superpower, and two teams which do nothing but stall but as they stall their territories are the kind with two full stacks of dice and thus they never get attacked and they never make a move on anyone.

Eventually the superpower kicks my behind as I slowly shrink, and die.

Strangly I think of it as a general moving troops, and when you move you leave only a few men behind who can get attacked. I like it :D

The more you play the more you realise how much skill is involved. Of course there is luck (The game is based on rolling dice!) but like poker or any gambling game you just work out whether the potential risk is greater than the potential gain. Also learning when and where to expand your "empire" with what armies does require a little gut instinct and expierence. Learning to use the "terrain" and enemies units as defense is important.

I love how there are different stages to the game where the start is a mixture of land grabbing and holding out while the end is often two superpowers slugging it out hoping for a roll of the dice to break the stalemate so one can dominate the other.

A couple of times I have ended up with three superpowers with nothing but double stacks on every "country". This situation is impossible to win or loose.

Also there was the very rare odd time I attacked a double stack with a significantly smaller army and won! But there were plenty of times it seemed that no matter what size army I attacked with all I was getting was basket ball squeaks instead of bounce sounds. :D
