Inherited car - what to do!

True but Car SOS may be interested.

The selection criteria and amount of entrants into these sorts of shows is stupidly high and OP's car and story doesn't really meet them.

He's best off getting it recovered to somewhere he can work on it and going from there. As has been said, signing up to the likes of RetroRides and other marque (or model) specific forums will help him out no end, not just with internet knowledge but also actual help in person.

If OP can save it from being scrapped then that's great, but I'd also warn that parts may not be easy to find and there may not be a lot of knowledge out there about them as it's not a sought after car really (but is rare and retro cool).

Turn it into a sleeper.. Pleeasseee!

Jump in at the deep end, engine swap, bigger brakes, better suspension. Leave it looking dirty etc :D

Or start off with getting it running :p

They only do cars which are interesting or special, if we're being totally frank then nobody is really interested in 1.6 passat estates no matter how old they are.

Can't say I'd make a point of watching an episode with a 1979 Passat 1.6 Estate in it, be it Wheeler or SOS.

Maybe a motor museum somewhere would be interested? Again though, it's hardly that exciting a prospect for an exhibit....

I would imagine the VW scene will snap it up - at quite a price - once it's running, I doubt the op will lose out one way or the other.

Again some awesome advice, cheers guys :) This is deffo something I want to try and do myself (maybe with some hired help occasionally), really just for the gained know-how and sense of accomplishment. I've joined RetroRides and also found a dedicated Dasher (B1 american name) forum, but I can't seem to join it (email verification never comes through!)
As said, I wanted to stick it at the back of the house down a small drive (so fairly secure). Really starting to wonder how much of an issue this might be with access (would have to push the car in between the house and a brick wall at the traffic lights off a main road), plus also keeping it dry, and being able to work during the winter. Just not got oodles of cash to be forking out on a luxury garage!
