Hi, I was wondering whether you guys can sort out a little problem for me.

I've recently switched from a cable to an adsl router. All is well, however, my first attempt at opening up my home page fails. It's only when I refresh it after I get the error message (cannot connect) does the internet page load. This problem didn't happen before, and have no idea how to solve it.

Any advice would be great. Btw my specs are:
Router: Linksys WAG54GS
Wireless PCI Adaptor: WMP54G

I'm assuming so, I don't really know how to check that? It sometimes happens when i don't use the internet for a while (even with the pc on)

The lights on the router should give a few clues or try pinging www.bbc.co.uk or 212.58.251.201 before opening your browser.
The router's web interface should say as well - while you're there, check for an idle timeout.

Connect on Demand: Max Idle Time 5 Minutes
Keep Alive: Redial period 30 Seconds

I have the first of these ticked. Do these figures sound about right?

Sounds like you have a Linksys router. The page not loading first time is because that the PPP session has been ceased because of an idle timeout and the router has to reconnect.

As it cannot reconnect quick enough, you'll find the you get page cannot be displayed, when you refresh the page - the router will have logged in and away you go.

To solve this switch to Keep Alive and set the timer to 20 seconds (thats the minimum anyway).

Umm, the problem seems to have re-emerged, although is a lot less frequent. Is there anything else I can do to prevent it from happening?

Thanks.

Right then, are you using wireless or connected via RJ45. Does the ADSL light go out when you find you cannot browse?

Also can you post your routers stats for us?

Attenution or Loop Loss (dB Up and Down)
SNR (dB Up and Down)
Sync Speed or Line rates (Up and Down)

EDIT: Just seen your using wireless, try it via an ethernet cable and see if you still have issues - you could have a wireless congestion issue. Also, please post your router stats still.

Umm, this is what's listed in the status section of the router settings:

Firmware Version: V1.01.01
MAC Address: 00:18:39:29:D1:62
Current Time: 21-07-2007 21:16:20

Login Type RFC 2364 PPPoA
Interface: Up
IP Address: 86.133.199.0
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway: 217.47.87.250
DNS1: 194.74.65.69
DNS2: 194.72.9.34
DNS3:
WINS: ---

Does this help? I've tried looking for the other parameters you suggested by can't seem to find them?

I've tried it before with an ethernet cable and as far as I remember it was having the same issues, albeit a lot less frequent. I'll have a look at what the router lights are doing next time the problem occurs

try using the connection status thing if there is one on that router, try re enabling the idle time but set it to like 9999 or something.

Youve not mentioned wether youve tested with the ethernet cable or not, you may be getting wireless dropouts/congestion.

As above, you can try with an idle time of 999 too and see how you get on. I wanted to see the router stats to see if you have a line issue or not.
