Inneresting Question Time

It's not just OS update - I use one app in particular that forces regular lengthy update in Windows but never on iOs. There's definitely a pattern here...

You have youre update settings on the ipad set to night time?

As there have been updates.

But then again someone will surely post that exploits vs fixes graph that shows ios and Windows have about the same number of exploits but apple just fixes about a 1/3rd what Windows does so you'll see leas

From 10 onwards updates in Windows are pants on head implementation wise - hence I stick to Windows 7 where I can - not to say the actual updates implementation is better there but at least you can take and keep manual control over them to side step the annoyances as much as possible. Likewise I find 10 seems to have an unerring ability to detect when doing updates stuff would be most inconvenient :s

Whether Mac is an option will be subjective to the individual and their requirements.

If I suddenly became a trillion air I'd buy ms, install a new door security system that almost daily took 1 to 8 hours to 'update", while updating all the building doors would remain locked and would not open.. The system woul often say its complete only to reboot and take another few hours to finish.. Once the update process had started there would be no way to stop it..

Id love to meet and do bad things to the person who decided not to put a cancel updates option in... I bet they are a multi million air with no life or friends..and I hate them so much

Would said system also show the updates as 100% downloaded but then continue to download for ages and, instead of a handy progress bar when they're being applied, would they display stupid little messages like 'Nearly There Now'?

As an aside, I've never used iOS for work purposes and I can see my self getting bitten on the derriere.

I mean, just for starters, there isn't even a utility to resize an image - you have to download a 3rd party app. I can see many such issues forthcoming. I do like the lack of bloatware and, obviously, the hardware, though.

A mac experience is 100% different to a windows one. Microsoft needs to take a page out of Apples book when it comes to updates and security for sure.

Separate security with useability patches.

They just need to copy the model and I believe they are now.

Or disconcerting messages like "Don't worry, your files are fine, almost done!" :D

I know they are, you're not meant to be touching them!

Just a general question.

I have spent years being subjected to endless windows updates (OS and program updates) and they always happen at the most inconvenient time and invariably screw something up (normally printer settings ).

I've been using an iPad now for 2 years and I don't recall any updates. Certainly one app in particular is forever requiring me to update before I can even use it on windows but when I use the ios version, that has never happened.

Is it time to move to a mac?

My ipda bugs me every day that I need to update the ios. In order to make the reminder go away I have input my pin number. Damn annoying.

No idea what you lot are doing but both my Win10 and MacOS 11 installs will download updates in the background and throw a prompt to install/restart.
But you can set Win10 to notify only through GP if you have a problem with auto updates/installs/restarts etc.

Apple do it much better, but think carefully about the switch.

They are, on average, slower at pushing out updates to vulnerabilities and fixes though. Whereas MS are usually a lot quicker due to their patch Tuesday's.

No operating system is perfect. If you've used Windows your whole life, unless you have a specific need for Mac, stick with Windows and put up with its foibles.

That said, as a Linux user my system is only ever updated when I want it to be, and then the process rarely takes more than a couple of minutes in the background. Linux is incredibly efficient and is excellent for customisation and control, but it's not for everyone, and it does have its issues. It's horses for courses.
