Everyone knows the flashing vertical line, but on a work computer it has disappeared.

The computer is running Windows 2000 all up to date, its been spyware checked with spybot and lavasofts one, its been ccleaned to fix any dodgy registry stuff. [just about to do full antivirus scan]

It still does it though and im having a hell of a time trying to find anyone with a similar sort of problem.

The input fields in question are search boxes, any search box, login detail boxes. You can right click the box and there are your options of undo etc, all greyed out apart from select all which doesnt work. Also, you cant select anything on a webpage, you cant get that mass of blue come up.

Is this a windows reinstall? because i cant for love nor money troubleshoot it. My old man [who uses it] said he installed some software that day but it did it before then.. and he says he has done nothing else.

Any ideas are much appreciated.

Internet explorer was the browser.. i didnt test another as it seems to be a problem throughout..

In outlook, you could type the address and subject etc of en email but the main text area you couldnt use just like all of the search boxes on the internet.

I didnt try the windows run box, should have done.. will call my old man and see what happens.

Rang him, and yeh you can use the run window.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

interesting problem to be sure. i'd give firefox a try just to see, but as it seems to be with all apps im not sure what it is. let me hunt about and see what i can find.

Your a star. Will go into work tomorrow and check it out. Muchos thankyou for your time though.

Thing is you say the windows install is up to date, yet the Microsoft page linked above says it only affects IE5/Outlook Express 5... which are pretty old versions now.

I seem to remember having this a couple of years ago, I never actually found a solution so I used another browser (Opera) for while before reformatting.

Yep, and the fix didnt work...

Downloaded Firefox and Thunderbird and they both seem fine.. If i install windows 2000 again will it disrupt any of the programs already on the machine.. a total format is really a last option.

Not sure if Win2000 does a repair install, perhaps you could look into it?

OR

Do you have any more 2000 systems? You could copy the dll from one, onto a floppy disk or something, then onto the broken system

Unfortunately not, i did try downloading the dll although i dont really like doing this as who knows whats been fiddled with but they didnt work and i replaced them with the older one anyway.

To be honest, i cant see that dll as the actual problem. Ive also found one of his programs is giving an error29 with Internet explorer script error.

At the moment im looking to remove internet explorer completely.. but it appears as im running service packs on this 2000 machine i cant do it any more...

Hmm... I just looked on Microsoft's webby and you can't download IE6 setup. Perhaps you can try IE7 Beta 3 to see if the problem still occurs?

Thats weird, i went on there earlier and found IE6. I reinstalled it to see if it fixed any of the broken files but everything remained the same.. and i believe IE7 is meant for XP +
