Input on my build

Hello!

So I am looking around to build a fairly decent desktop to use for games and some graphical work like UX design and the occational film editing. I have put together parts for a computer that are within my budget (even with a bit to spare). I already got everything else, so its just about the PC itself.

I do wonder however if people with a bit more experience can give some input. Is this all decent? have I missed something? Other tweaks/ideas for it? (Do I need that cooling paste for the CPU cooler?)

I went with Intel instead of AMD as I got some bad experience with AMD and the amount of support I've needed for it previously with technical issues. Meanwhile Intel has just "worked". (Don't want to come across as a fan boy or anything, just want to build it and work). I'm also not a huge fan of RGB, so tried to keep most things just black and "sleak".
Thinking of just getting Windows onto the SSD along with a game or two, then store pictures/music etc on the HDD.

All the Best
Lotias

You couldn't have picked the worst and most un-necessarily expensive parts possible :p No reason not to go AMD... they're the absolute perfect choice for your use case described.

You didn't mention what res/refresh you play at? Or what games do you play? 2080 Super seems an insane purchase right now, considering Nvidia next gen is round the corner and due release next month... The prices on 2080S is gonna tank hard no doubt like most other cards when next gen is out very soon.

Do you have an existing system already? Could be worth re-using GPU if you can, or hold off until next month to purchase altogether. If you had to buy now, I'd be tempted to buy a cheaper GPU then sell it later on and buy a Nvidia next-gen GPU.

I'd go with the below or similar + whatever GPU or hold off til next gen release.

Haha yeah I've heard that AMD is better for "multimedia" projects! Just as I said that when I used AMD I ended up a bit frustrated and annoyed with it when there was issues (that said, this was back in 2015-ish). That is true, I tend to mainly go for space sim games, such as Elite Dangerous. Would also be interested in playing Cyberpunk when it comes out.

I hear you about the GPU. It's been a bit of a headache as we don't "know" I guess and what I've read has all been about the 30-series using other connectors and places saying that the prices might not plumet down on the 20-series. At the moment I just got an i5 (8th gen). Which I guess will do... but still :D

Do I "really" need 32GB RAM at that clock frequeny? Havent really come across much that shouts for more than 16GB in terms of software etc.

I am not in a SUPER rush to buy, just moving house at the end of next week, so thought it would be a nice little "moving in present" to myself haha! I mean at some point its like you just keep waiting for new technology and never actually end up buying anything as "next great thing is around the corner". - But I havent followed the hardware side of thing that close for the past 2 years so still are lacking in bits (and hence ask for input/advice! :D)

Screen at the moment are a 27" 1440p screen (155hz).

Ryzen likes higher speed RAM and takes advantage of it compared to Intel. 3200MHz is the sweet spot and 3600 is a little better for not much more. Also RAM is cheap atm and video editing software likes more RAM, depends how casual/frequent it is for you. For the small price increase against your overall budget, I'd spend the extra to future proof but your call mate. 16GB is of course still perfect for gaming right now.

What GPU do you have now? Honestly I'd just buy the system minus GPU and re-use current, then get the 3080/3090 or whatever later next month if it was me. Hopefully Ampere can push AAA games closer to 120+ fps @ 1440p res, to take advantage of that high refresh rate.

1. Go AMD
2. Great build recommended.
3. Consider if you need the 3900x 12 core CPU or if the 3700x 8 core will do.
4. No you don't really need 32gb RAM, but if you're doing lots of video editing it might be nice, and at this price point , why not..
5. I'm not personally a fan of liquid cooling as my PC is on a lot unattended. If i was getting one an Arctic Liquid would be the one.
6. Don't buy a graphics card right now. Point taken about something better always being around the corner but we're almost around this corner...
7. Don't buy Seagate mechanical HDD's unless you ALWAYS back up...

Currently on a 1650 card which I think are on its last legs, bought it second hand, lol.

Yeah that is some solid advice. Thoughts Seagate was meant to be good though?

.Case , motherboard, gpu and aio cooler are all rgb. :D you would have been lit up like an Xmas tree.

Haha yeah... that is kinda embarrasing.. thought I had selected the black ones. Guess thats what happens when you watch F1 and try to do this at the same time :D

Well up to you on the GPU front :p Maybe get the Gigabyte 2070S for £449 on sale? Better value for money than the 2080S tbh.

Could always sell it later on and get an Ampere GPU if you fancy. Wouldn’t have tanked as hard as the 2080S in price I’m sure :D

Seagate aren’t that bad either. They were a bit meh many years ago. Now they’re about the same as WD in terms of failure rate, all more of the same. I’d just use the HDD for documents photos videos etc anyway, then have a cloud backup for any important photos/docs etc.

Yeah I'll give it some more thinking, thank you so much for your input btw! As you say it's fully possible to upgrade cards over time, guess my biggest worry is if the new 3000 cards will end up using other sockets etc so I ending up having to change motherboard/PSU as well. I guess only time will tell for sure?

Would it be worth increasing the PSU to 850w? just to have that leanroom for future upgrades? sure it's a little bit more money, but maybe worth it in the long run?

That motherboard will support all Gpus for many years to come so no need to worry.

I've been giving this some more thinking. Seeing how close we are to the 3000 series I will wait for that to be launched, I will just have to hold on with my old junk until then.

Still trying to decide on case though. Kinda like the Fractal one linked, but also a fan of Be Quiet! cases as I've had a couple of them. That said a friend of mine recommended a couple Corsair ones which he had his brother had been using. How much of a difference does the case do? I guess as long as you put in ~£150 you should get something decent regardless?

Also, is it worth picking up a couple extra fans to mount at the top back? Been a few years since I bought a case, so not sure what they come with these days (As I've seen some cases in peoples videos where they get 2-3 fans pre installed).

Buying a decent case bequality, more fans , cable management, build options and more.

There are plentry of decent options In the range £50 - £100, if you want to spend more that's up to you.

Why don't you just pick a case you like and we will give our opinion, or check out reviews online.

So I had a look around on my lunch break earlier today in terms of cases and have read some reviews where people mainly seem happy.

Which one of these would you (reader) recommend out of these? They are fairly similar, just more or less USB ports on the front, not sure I would use more than 1 though (for wireless headset)

I have the Corsair 275R and it’s decent, but nothing special.

As Quartz said, the Meshify C by Fractal is a good case with better airflow, think it’s around £100 mark.

The Define 7 you picked is also pretty good, especially if you want a lot of room. More pricier case though.

Ok, I guess RTX 3080 could work for my build now that we've seen it, the question is, will I need a better PSU and a bigger case to host it? Like a Meshify S2 or something?
