So I've been after a GPU upgrade for a while now, but they always seem to pop up when I'm in work so no chance as the hospital proxy blocks web stores, so the idea I have come up with is to buy a prebuilt 5800X/RTX3090 system for £2400, put the RTX3090 in my rig, put my 5700XT in the prebuilt system and eBay it which when all is said and done should result in me getting my RTX3090 in under two weeks and for below MSRP.

But this seems completely insane to me, but it also makes sense, can somebody confirm if my plan is cunning or lunacy please :S

It's no secret that pre-builts are cheaper at the moment.

There is money to be saved in a scheme like this but it's risky and takes vast liquidity.
If you accept an offer that is too low on the used market it'll eat all your savings.

nothing new to be honest.. in fact this is what miners seem to be doing.. since prebuilts are generally cheaper at the moment than buying GPU alone, they are now buying prebuilds, ripping out the GPU, and either flogging the prebuilds on ebay with or without a crappy replacement GPU

Jayztwocents sums it up well

nice idea but if its a 3090 youre after you shouldnt have too much issue getting one. if its to save a buck however getting 3090 for less than mrsp go careful mate... £2k is a massive risk (well maybe not for you?) just to save £100 or so.

bear in mind costs of selling on ebay also - they take 10%. that'll eat up the £100 or so you'll save instantly

Also, forgot to mention theres the hassle of selling and returns on ebay. people i sold to on there seem to be very VERY picky. and returns are expensive and almost always in favour of buyer even if your pc is in the exact condition and performs exactly as YOU would expect it to (not them). I sold a system on there once and I had to pay return posatge simply because he wasnt getting 200fps on fortnight - on a damn gtx1060... 3gb!!!!

All comes down to how much of a deal you can get for vs how much time/money you could save.
