Hi,

What with it very nearly christmas and all, I'm looking for any photography books that you would recommend that showcase inspiring photography (something for santa to bring me!;) )..

..any recommendations? :)

On a related note, what about inspiring photography websites?

cheers

Can't comment on books but if you want a website try the photo hosting site www.pbase.com

There are some amazing galleries on there. I have got many different ideas from looking through the images online.
It is also very varied so can get you trying out new ideas too.

I recently got Looking East by Steve McCurry. Couldn't recommend it enough.

McCurry is the guy who took the famous National Geographic portrait of the Afghan Girl, which pretty much everyone has seen. The book is large and has some gorgeous images. Some almost as powerful as his Afghan Girl.

Unless you want to go undercover into some poor, war ridden, dangerous country with only a local guide and a burka or similar disguise as protection, you obviously wont be able to emulate him :) but there is a lot to appreciate in his images about portraiture in general. The way the backgrounds make the faces jump at you through use of depth of field, contrasting colours, etc. was what struck me the most.
