Inspiron 570 Upgrade?

cpu fan cooler?

According to the dell forum link I posted 8gb is officially supported by dell but 16gb works if installed - there is no "unlocking" to do. The 785 chipset the board is based on supports a maximum of 16gb.
Do you need more than 8gb though?

As for a new heatsink/fan I suggest you read the dell forum link carefully. The poster talks about using heatsink/retention bracket for socket 1366/775 motherboards (intel based ones) so tread carefully :)

Thanks, so plugging in more that 8GB RAM would be wasted RAM? Shame if so, one of these days they will make computers forwardly compatible - that's if desktops and laptops still exist in 10 years time and we haven't all gone over to (yawn) micro tablets! :D

16GB because I also use music software which is getting memory hungry - but it's not really an issue with the 570 which I will just use for basic things, like Word, emails, and so forth ... maybe some creative stuff as well.

Yes, customising or customised brackets I do not like the sound of, I was hoping there was something powerful off the shelf which would fit the 570. What about something like this please?

More ram is only a waste if you are not using it. Do you know if the 8GB you have already is in 2x4GB or 4x2GB modules?

Quote from the dell forum uber guide:
"So, basic cooling. You have a lot of choices here. It is very important to know that Dell motherboard (MOBO) model 04GJJT has Intel LGA775 screw type mounting socket, not AMD standard and not Intel clips, I think it was done by Dell to lower the overall costs."

Taking into account the above, the cooler you have linked to will probably work, the same as any cooler specified to work with socket 775 will probably work. The important bit seems to be the mounting screws for the heatsink fitting the cpu backplate already attached to your motherboard. This is about as close as an "off the shelf" solution as you are going to get.

best socket 775 fan / cooler?

Thanks for this. The modules will be mix'n'match because I upgraded the memory for mum about a year ago: 6GB currently installed, was 4 or less :-o

Slot 'DIMM0' has 2048 MB
Slot 'DIMM1' has 2048 MB
Slot 'DIMM2' has 1024 MB
Slot 'DIMM3' has 1024 MB

Guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and order a socket 775 compatible cooler - the best (most powerful / efficient) I can find and get down & dirty with screwdriver, torch and pliers.
