Hi guys

My works van does not have a 12v socket installed, this is a bit of a pain as I can't use my sat nav on long journeys due to having no power source for it.

This picture shows where the socket would have been if one had of been installed, these are the wires that are there.

Is it easy to install one? Any advice would hugely be appreciated.

Cheers

1) get a multimeter and find a switched live within those connectors
2) buy a 12v socket off ebay
3) ram the wires into the applicable pins and tape to secure
4) done

Speak to the parts department at your local dealer to find out if they do a 12v socket for it. That way you're not cutting up cables in a van that doesn't belong to you.

The red is the 12v, one is the ground. All electrical circuits are a circuit, so they need a ground and a source.

Did you not do physics at school? :D

All you need to do is get that and ram the red to a pin which is giving 12v in those connectors, and the black into a pin which is a ground.:)

Oh I did, but school was a fair few years ago and I tend to not mess with electrics where possible :D ps van does belong to me so don't worry about cables etc... Right ill pop to halfords now!

Cheers chaps :)

TBH the suggestion that you could buy the proper part for the van is worth looking at, it might be cheap, and it would plug n play if those connectors really are designed to take it.

No 12V socket at all?? How curious!

What is the van and how old?

I don't suppose this is a side effect of the "No smoking in works vehicles" legislation??

(Fleet buyers now given the option of not having lighters installed)

But pretty inconvenient for all the other portable equipment that people like to use in vehicles these days (I have felt that proper USB sockets should be provided for this function really, at least for low consumers such as cellphone charging and sat navs)

:/

would have thought if they were getting rid of lighter sockets for work purposes then they would just replace the cap on it so it's still a power outlet but no heating element? I mean in the kia I have, it has the lighter and a 12v outlet either side of the center console :p

but yea I'm all for the DIY but agree it would be worth asking the dealer if there is a simple cheap plug n play part.

See if you can get the OEM part off ebay then it should be an easy plug and play with no cutting holes/soldering/whatever.

It's an 08 fiat fiorino. No socket what so ever. Ok well I have it hooked up and the light turns on all well. But no power, do I need to hook the 2 prongs on the bottom of the lighter socket up aswell? (as shown in pic) I don't like messing with electrics but this seems relatively simple, I just don't know straight off the bat :P

Cheers chaps

The picture is hard to see, but from it it looks as though the cables which you have connected are powering just the lamp to the side. The connector prongs from the bottom of the socket itself are the bits you need to power. Black will go to the outer (ground), red to the inner (12v).

Hi Jez. Thank you very much for all your help mate. All is working and charging now :D really couldn't have done it without your advice. Appreciate it :)

Merry Christmas!
Rich :D

Ford do that on the transit just a cheap plastic cap with 12v on it.
