Hi

I cannot for the life of me manage to install winxp using the sil3114 ports on my motherboard. Recently my normal SATA ports have gone mental and constantly fail to detect my hard drives, so I have moved them onto the sil3114 ports instead but cannot install winxp properly.

I have 3x 500GB Samsung HD501J hard drives, I dont want to setup any sort of RAID array I just want to use the sata ports as normal. I have altered my windows XP installation disc to include the sil3114 base drivers. If I have just the 1 drive connected it does not detect anything, if I have all drives connected it manages to detect 2 of the 3 hard drives but after transferring all the necesary installation files it does not continue to install WinXP as it normally would, instead I get bootmgr missing error.

Is it possible to use the sil3114 sata ports as normal sata ports like the nvidia ones?

Its really starting to frustate me now, id really like to get it working as it would save me a couple of quid as id really have to upgrade my system (new mobo/cpu/ram) as ive been unable to find a replacement skt939 board.

Please help!!!

All of the 3rd party sata controllers I have used have had the option to use RAID or the "IDE" mode, but with either one you still need a driver, and a there is a driver for each so make sure you have the right one for what your doing.

Hope that helps.

Seems like that something both SATA controllers use is either broken or not configured correctly!!
Also are you sure it's the SATA controllers? Have you run tests on the HD's on a working rig? Also an over-night memtest+ stability test would be a good idea!

Well I just flashed the Sil3114 bios to the latest version 5.4.0.3 using the b5403.bin which is meant to be the IDE bios and also put the SiI3114 32-bit Windows BASE Driver 1.3.10.0 in the windows xp installation cd.
On the motherboard BIOS i have the Sil controller enabled but dont have any raid setup, just the sata drives plugged into the sil3114 ports. The windows installation does not find any hard-drives.

Any ideas? There doesnt seem to be any options in the sil3114 bios other than creating raid arrays.

Yes I have tested the HDD's, they are all fine. The problem with the nvidia sata ports is that at times it does not detect ANY sata devices what so ever, including my SATA dvd-drive. This has only recently started happening over the last few weeks, prior to that ive had no issues at all.

According to the manual the RAID BIOS will not report non RAID configured disks to the system BIOS and hence to the XP installer. You'll need to go into the RAID BIOS and configure the drive you want to install to as a JBOD (just a bunch of disks) array - this is just a complicated way of having a single drive.

having a look around it doesnt like the onboard sil3114 supports JBOD so im stuck really.

I guess I need to decide whether to get a new mobo/sata controller card or to upgrade the system (cpu/ram/mobo).

Yeah. Id either have to get myself a SATA controller which looks around £50-£70 or a new skt939 mobo for about the same price.

But seeing as its an old socket I might be better off just spending a bit more and upgrading to core 2 duo or am2+.

I hate silicon image based sata controllers, every single one ive come accross has caused me major headaches. If I was in this situation I would buy a cheap VIA based sata card or get a new motherboard.
