Installation of Fedora core 5 for Newb

One other question, when trying to install Fedora 13 to a differnt hard drive it wouldn't do it stating it contained raid metadata.

I understand I can clean this meta data using dmraid - e also there is mdadm, question is how do I run these commands? Which is th ebest to use?

Quick question, how can I tell if an app is installed or not?

I had a go at installing mysql-client, mysql-server and mysql-devel it looked like it was installing, it asked for SU password, proceeded to appear to be doing something but at the moment I can't tell if it has loaded anything or not.

Also an application I need to test the install of is a bin file what do I do with this to get it installed? Its also on the dvd drive so how do I install from there?

Matt

Right got the app installed but I need to modify a file in the etc directory how can I do this?

I can find the file if I go through computer and navigate down, but as soon as I edit the file it becomes read only.

How can I either navigate to the file from command prompt or edit the file and save it?

Also have tried to run the software but receive a message that it "ERROR - Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)". Although I can't tell if MYSQl is loaded when I try to use yum to reinstall it I get the message nothing to do.

Whilst waiting for responses I have fitted a separate hard drive and installed fedora 5, all sort of seems ok, but I don't think it has any of the drivers for the majority of the hardware.

I get the message that smartd failed and the bluetooth part failed.

I also rebooted the machine and ended up at a GRUB prompt which is a boot loader so how do I tell it to boot to the desktop installed?

Matt

Right I have just been told using a Virtual Machine is an option - Virtual Box. Does anybody use this? How easy is it to use? What are the licencing implications for using this?

I use Virtual box all the time, very easy to use and seems to work pretty well (it is developed by Sun Microsystems after all).

License implications? There are none, its released under the GNU open source license so is freely available.
