Installed 8400 GS, how do I make my use of it and disable integrated graphics?

I recently installed a 8400 GS in my dads Dell Inspirion 2400 so that he could connect to a monitor I gave him that only takes HDMI and DVI-I, however it's not as easy to change options within his system as I have done with mine. (Partly because it's so ****ing slow, who uses a paging file these days?)

All I need to know, is how to make use of the 8400 GS GPU and not the integrated graphics. The monitor he uses now seems to turn on so slowly after boot I can't tell when I'm supposed to press F2 or whatever to get into BIOS. Every time I do try to F2 after boot to get into BIOS, the screen just doesn't turn on.

I'd also like some clarification on how to install drivers on windows xp? The GPU didn't come with a disc, does the new installer nvidia uses work fine for installing drivers?

try pressing delete constantly just as you turn on your pc, that may take you into the bios .

That doesn't work, all that happens when I do that is;

Monitor never turns on
After about 10 seconds of either holding down delete, spamming it or even only pressing it every 3 seconds, it will eventually make a beep if I continue to hold it down or spam it.

If I stop this, it'll eventually continue to the login screen.

I think with Dell it's F12.
There should be an option to disable onboard graphics but TBH, iit would be easier to fit a new mobo as the Dell ones are garbage

If you have plugged the monitor lead into the graphics card rather then the onboard port on the motherboard then if you get any display on the screen, it's now using the graphics card. If you don't get a display on the screen then I would say that the card isn't firmly in the slot. If you have fitted the card correctly but left the montior plugged into the on-board then you will get no display.

@cleecoo that didn't work either found out if I plug in the vga cable to the gpu at boot it'll show the windows xp loading screen however any time after that it'll just show black screen, even after plugging back into the motherboard, logging on and then plugging back into the 8400

It will display for both however the 8400 will only diaplay the xp loading screen

The 'if you want to use this device you need to disable another device in the system' convinces me the only real option is to find out how to disable the integrated graphics.

Update:

I'm now able to use the monitor fully when using a connection through my graphics card, however, there are still a few hiccups:

1. The 'performance' seems fine but whenever I drag windows or scroll down web pages, it's very slow at doing so and instead of smoothly scrolling or moving (in the case of dragging a window), it will constantly redraw itself while moving to the spot I've scrolled/moved it to.

I did not get this issue using the integrated gfx.

2.

I've now disabled the integrated graphics thru device manager and in the BIOS I set the integrated graphics to 'auto', which means it will automatically use a gfx card if detected, and integrated if not. The only options were 'auto' and 'integrated'.

3. I'm not sure which drivers I should use, 266.58 or the ones that came with the disc?

Granted, afterburner may not support a low end card like the 8400 GS but GPU-Z reports the 8400 GS at 0 mhz, when I'm using it to connect to the monitor

and the integrated graphics are running at the full 200 mhz?

Have you installed the nvidia drivers? Windows will auto-detect the card and install its own drivers but that won't be much better than on-board.
