Installing a New CPU Cooler

My Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Cooler will be arriving tommorow and I wanted to ask a few questions regarding its installation onto a Q6600 which currently has the stock cooler on it.

  • When cleaning the CPU, is it best to take it out of the motherboard? I plan on using ArctiClean.
  • Assuming I remove the CPU from my motherboard, what kind of surface would it be safe to rest on whilst it is drying? Would it be OK to leave the components on the same material, if not, which is best for them?
  • When installing the new cooler and fan, should I do this outside of the case? I have an Antec 900. I am aware that the motherboard will have to be removed anyway so that the backplate can be attached.
  • When attaching the fan to the cooler, is it best to have it sucking air into the cooler, or blowing out the hotter air towards the rear exhaust fan?
  • I have just bought some anti-static gloves from a competitor, and was wondering whether simply wearing the gloves would be enough (the wrist band can get a little annoying) when handling my components? Click here for an image.

Is this true? I have always used a wrist band connected to a radiator before.
Antistatic Gloves work continuously, discharging electricity harmlessly as it's generated

Sorry if these questions seem really obvious, I just want to be doing the right things tomorrow when fiddling with expensive components.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

I just put my parts on my wood desk.

I would install the cooler outside the case it gives you more room to work with.

I don't use antistatic wrist bands i find them a waste of money.

- i've never used a cleaner for my cpu but i do take it out of the mobo to wipe it clean.
- yea you do have to remove the mobo to attach the back plate
- the fan should be closest to the front of the case so it it blowing air through the heatsink to the back for exhaust.
- i've never used anti-static gloves or wrist bands, never had a a problem, i usually build my computers on a wooden table in my dining room on a tiled floor, i think you'll find very few people do use them tbh.

good luck with it all man, let us know what o/c you get ;) it's a great cooler it's running my e6600 @ 3.6 at 60oC max (limited o/c my mobo:()

EDIT: just encase you didn't know the thermalright ultra-120 extreme does not come with a 120mm fan.
