Installing a new HDD

Basically I need a new HDD as my current 1TB is full, I've ordered a second. My PC also needs a system restore as it has a couple errors, probably because of the messy installations of multiple anti virus programs when I started it years ago...

Anyway, do I install the new HD into it and transfer files across (including steam games if possible)...
Or do I do something else so I can put my OS on the newer drive which is faster 7400 instead of 5600... If that's the case how do I install windows from the older drive with all my files on it?

So confused, never upgraded a system before.

Thanks in advance for all help.

what version of windows are you using?

you can get a W10 and W8.1 tool to create you a bootable USB stick so you can do a clean install, if its W7 you may have issues finding the ISO file to create a USB stick. also is it a retail version of the OS or OEM? (OEM came pre installed retail is one you bought from a shop)

you have a few options

1. install the new HDD and copy over all your games and documents then do a clean install on the current drive.

2. install the new HDD and DISCONNECT the old drive as when you do a clean install of your OS you don't want windows installing files on to it. once windows is installed you can connect your old drive up and then have access to all your files or copy them over to your new HDD and format the old drive so its free from left over OS files

Sorry for the late reply. It's OEM windows 7 64 bit. I have the option to download windows 10 on my laptop, but it is literally so close to death and I don't think it'll work... I'm sure I can find someone who has it on a flash drive I guess. But yeah option 2 sounds like more hassle but will achieve what I need.

as its OEM I would do this

- make sure your current OS is activated.
- upgrade to W10 - make sure again its activated.
- download the W10 ISO file from here http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
- create a USB bootable stick through the above software or DVD
- install new HDD (disconnect second HDD during install)
- reboot and tell it to boot from USB or DVD
- skip where it asks you for a product key as W10 will activate once online through hardware ID.
- connect second HDD and copy what you want from it.
- format second HDD and keep as storage or bin\rma if faulty
