Is it possible to install Ubuntu onto a hard drive connected to one computer then move it over to another and use it without having to reinstall. I'm setting up a boinc machine and don't have a spare CD or DVD drive to put in it so want to install linux on this computer first and have a useable OS for the other machine.

Thanks

I've done this on some of my FAH crunchers and it didn't seem to mind. It's possible that this is not a good practive though. I'd think that the installer scans for hardware and installs the drivers for that stuff. It, I think, would also have to load up other hardware drivers in case things change. When the kernel boots you can see it say something to the effect of "Scanning for new hardware" where I imagine that will notice the difference and load up new drivers for the lot.

Yes, it does appear that I'm stalking you lately, Amp. :D

I was just going to say that :p

I'll do it that way then, it will make it easier than having to take a dvd drive out of this one just to install one thing on the HD. Would i need to install Boinc at the same time, or could i just download it straight from the website using the server version of linux when the Hd's in the other PC?

Thanks again

You should be able to install it on another machine and move the HDD onto another machine. This is since the kernel contains ALL the drivers for the system and hence the drivers exist. Linux should detect this hardware and load in the appropriate drivers

Yep. The kernel is built with all the drivers as modules, so it can autodetect stuff and adjust it's configuration accordingly.

Same is true for most of the bigger distros - Ubuntu and Red Hat and the like.

I would probably wait until the HDD is in its final location for that. I know FAH benchmarks the machine before it sends out any work. If BOINC does the same then you might end up with less work than it can handle. I suspect that all the settings can be managed for it over the BOINC web interface so it wouldn't matter either way. Stay on the safe side?
