Basically, the GF's family have bought a new router, a Netgear DGN2000, to replace their 5/6 year old Netgear one, not sure on the model, but looks almost identical, is white and only has 1 antenna, their reason for doing so is because apparently their Internet throughout the day can drop and wireless signal can drop too, their current routers antenna is almost snapped off as well.

They've asked me to install it, I have built them 2 dirt cheap computers for them, for their teenager son & daughter and recommended her mum a laptop and setup everything for them, eg; installing OS, AV, Office etc.. I have no problem building PC's as that's what I've done for myself, researched and built 3 computers for myself including a Matx WC'd rig, however I've never really had to do anything regarding setting up my Internet, as far I as remember, back in the XP days I just installed my motherboard drivers and with Vista/Win7 almost practically a plug and play affair.

Their home setup is basically, 1 computer next to where the router is situated which is connected via an Ethernet cable and a computer & laptop elsewhere connected wirelessly. So, thinking and hoping it was going to be practically a plug and play affair I replaced their current router and plugged it in exactly the same way and just thought Win7 would sort it out and all I'd have to do was go to the router homepage and change their Wifi name & password and be done with it, well, it didn't quite work out that way.

The power, Ethernet, wireless and DSL lights were green, however the Internet LED was either not on or red. I went to the router homepage, did things like setup etc but had no joy and after about 30 mins of messing about, it wouldn't even connect to the router homepage, I tried ip config /release all and other variances but no luck so just connected the other router to give them the Internet for now.

Any suggestions? On the setup it did ask for a username & password (from ISP) but they don't know them..

Its just a 2MB connection from BT i think which they got 6 years ago.

Thanks in advance.

Well if there's no username entered then that's your problem. From memory the BT connections simply use your BT email address with no password - maybe someone else can confirm this?

You wont believe it, missus just rang, and basically when I said ISP, she asks what that is, so after explaining what ISP stands for and what they are/do she now reckons their ISP is actually AOL.. sorry guys lol.. their a default AOL username & password like the BT one above I can try?

I would reconnect the old netgear router and access the setup of that by going to http://192.168.0.1 fingers crossed they haven't changed the login details so they should be:

Username: Admin
Password: password

Under basic settings you should see the login username for their ISP and other settings such as DNS servers if they've been defined, the router could be set to get from ISP. While you’re in the old router setup screen have a look at the wireless settings for the SSID and wireless password so you setup the new netgear router in the same way.

Once you've got the username contact the ISP to get their connection password. Disconnect the old netgear router connect up the new netgear router and enter their ISP details and the new router should then connect.
