So I've unstalled Ububtu on my PC but I can only get 1024x768 res, i'm guessing I need to upgrade the graphics drivers?

So I try to install the Nvidia drivers, I download the ones from the site, login as root using "su root" and try running installing them using the sh command. it starts up but says something about checking "ls" is included in my PATH which is totally lost on me :p (linux noob!)

So I find a how to on the Ubuntu forums: http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Latest_Nvidia_Breezy which totally confuses me!

then I read on here about the add/remove thing built into Ubuntu which has Nvidia drivers on it, I think I install that OK but I have no idea what to do then to up my resolution.

WHY CAN'T IT BE EASY!!! :mad: :mad: :p

I've found this now, i'll see how it goes! http://www.cs.cornell.edu/~djm/ubuntu/#nvidia-driver

Heh yeah I do, there's a few people there who use it actualy :)

Who are you?

Got it to work :D I noticed some lines with my monitors screen resolutions on, and I just added "1680x1050" and restarted the desktop manager and hey presto :D

Una: I don't think you know me, my name's Andrew Macbeth, I just finished 2nd Year IS. Who are you?

Ah you don't then. I just finished 1st year Comp Sci - the names Alex anyhow :)

Right.. next problem! My mouse (MX700) and keyboard (USB) freeze every few seconds for a couple of seconds and as you can imagine its VERY annoying! any ideas? it doesn't matter weather the mouse is plugged in my USB or PS/2 it still does it. :mad:

It doesn't seem to like it, I'm following the guide here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DMA

and i'm getting things like:

Code:
hamish@hamish-desktop:~$ sudo hdparm /dev/hda
/dev/hda: No such file or directory
hamish@hamish-desktop:~$ sudo hdparm /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 IO_support   =  0 (default 16-bit)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 20023/255/63, sectors = 321672960, start = 0
hamish@hamish-desktop:~$ sudo hdparm -d1 /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
hamish@hamish-desktop:~$

I think it might be because my drives are SATA?

Oooh I see, probably not the DMA thing then. Well if your getting that SCSI error anyhow it certainly sounds like a driver problem or some sort to do with your disk controller or HDD (Linux uses SCSI for SATA).

hdparm does not work with SATA drives yeah. Are you getting any error msgs in dmesg when the freezes happen?

Its /var/log/dmesg - cat /var/log/dmesg basicly or just 'dmesg' on its own.

OK it wasn't fixed :( 'dmesg' gives this. Any ideas? :(

It seems there is a problem with drivers/scsi/libata-core.c.

What kernel are you running? 'uname -a'

You shouldn't mess around with the CD eject as well. Its like that for a reason :)

Maybe you should compile/install the latest kernel.

Linux hamish-desktop 2.6.15-25-386 #1 PREEMPT Wed Jun 14 11:25:49 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux

Also when I shutdown it says something like "Additional sense: SCSI parity error"

Why do they not let you eject CDs? seems stupid! :p

You need to unmount the cd drive before you eject it. If your doing it from a GUI (I.e gnome, and click eject it does it automatically).

The reason for it is if you just pull a cd out while its still spun up you can damage your drive.

Its definatly a problem with sata/scsi driver, you should google your chipset and see if anyone else is having similar problems. Other than that you could try building a more upto date kernel. 2.6.17.4 for example.
