Installing PS3 OS

What is the benefit of installing a seperate OS on the PS3? What is the attraction?

Also, is it just Linux that can be installed?

And finally, what happens when you start the PS3 with the OS installed? Does it go straight to the OS or to the XMB?

yeah i also don't see the attraction, but then again i've never "got" linux... had a play a few times and just seemed like a sub-standard looking interface with the ability to do not as much stuff as os x or windows...

saying that i spose if you're just browsing the tinternet or running a server, might as well be on a free OS i guess... but i can't see anything else its good for personally...

i'll stick with my macbook and use the PS3 for games, blu-ray and streaming

It's just a neutered variant of linux, so yes.
