Over the past 4 weeks i've had several blue screen crashes on my computer. Ive never been there when they happened but i go to the computer and theres no programs open but theres a message about how the computer recently recovered from a serious problem.

Since i havent changed anything over that time period i'm assuming its some kind of virus or the likes. I'm running microsoft security essentials on it at the moment but if it doesnt find anything im thinking i'll need to reformat.

Before i do so is there anything special i need to do since my operating system is on a ssd?

The computer is a pre-built from ocuk so i didnt install windows first time round so just basically wanted to check there was nothing extra i need to be aware of due to it being a ssd as opposed to a normal hdd.

Thanks

Start by installing and updating then running malwarebytes, its a good buddy to MSE.
Viruses really should't be causing BSODs, which version of windows are you running?
Is it fully updated with windowsupdates etc?

I think i have malware bytes already installed so ill give that a whirl.

I've got some updates that havnt been installed so ill also give that a try though its been fine up to now so didnt think it would be anything to do with them.

You could be right that a virus wouldnt cause a bsod, i suppose i just jumped to that conclusiob since the computer was fine and dandy and i havent changed anything.

In the Start menu search bar enter Event Viewer and open the program.

Under Windows Logs > System Logs, find any entry marked with a red symbol, usually a ! or an X. This should signify something unfortunate happened. Look at all the errors and warnings just before this point. In many cases the error entry can tell you what happened.

BSODs tend to be caused by driver issues. If you are lucky it will tell you which driver. Specifically it will probably mention a .sys file - look it up on the web if you aren't sure where it is from.

Thanks for the help.

I looked up event viewer but all it seems to say is that the computer was rebooted from a bugcheck. Doesnt give me a whole lot more information.

Im sorry Sirus but that's rubbish. Yes BSOD can be caused by bad drivers but in most case's it's hardware related. Who Crashed would determine if it's a driver problem.

Hardly rubbish. Vast majority of BSoDs I deal with are drivers falling over. I'll make sure to put IME at the end of my next BSoD related reply, so as not to upset you! :p
