Your point is not lost on me. I fully see were you are coming from but The odds of battery fail, circuit tripped and fire all in one go, while possible very unlikely.

Nothing can be 100% fail safe. What if there is a power cut!

A power fail unit has its own battery, so it would beep.
Actually a supercapacitor would make that a bit more reliable, I might make one for my freezer

Optical smoke vs. ionisation isn't a simple case one one being better than the other. They each have uses in certain locations.
