how do i install the zalman 900 (i tihnk its called that) on a x1900 xtx, i dont know what it is i have to unscrew and then put it where?
i hear also that i will have to use some AS5, where do i put this?

It's all explained in the manual + there's an online installation animation which shows you how to install it.

I would explain how to do it here, but the manual/online guide really is better.

Have a read of the manual - look at pictures on the net of other peoples graphics cards, its preety easy didnt need the manual todo it myself but i'm preety computer literate.

The only difficulty you will have is that its quite fiddly, so you may need an extra hand (I did)
Instructions are as clear as ice though :)

.....and don't put it on upside down with the bulk of the fan pointing out over the side that gets plugged in. You'll find the card won't be able to be plugged in properlly.

It's an easy mistake to make.....but luckily easy to fix too. :D

not to hijak the thread but hasnt there been some reports of the zalman not being amazing good for the ati's?

I think that the X1900 (and maybe the 7900gtx) is the only card that doesn't get a massive benefit from from the heatsink in terms of temps (though there is still some reduction), but it certainly does in terms of noise. The side effect is that case temps go up as the air is not directly vented.

im getting a temp of 91 degrees on my x1900xtx with the v900. is this about right then? with the stock fan i got about 90 too.

the vf900 is pointless fitting to a 7900 GTX as the stock cooler is silent and more than does its job.

Well, your temps are higher than I was expecting (though not the highest i've heard), but if there is only a degree in it I suppose it's within the margin of error. Because the Zalman doesn't vent the air you'll probably find that the temperature increase in case is have the feedback effect of raising the ambient temperature around the card; meaning higher temps over all. As is often the case, better airflow will lower the temperature further (assuming your room isn't a sauna).

Out of interest what's the noise like compared to the stock cooler?

i have a lian li v1000+ and it comes with an extra air exhaust thingy which can sit right by the side of the gfx card, i didnt have it on before but ive now put it on, this should get rid of the extra heat from the zalman. In another post some people have told me that my high temp is due to me putting too much thermal paste on, i put the whole tub when i only meant to be a pea size amount on  ill let u know what happens to my temps when i take the excess off.
The noise from the zalman is a lot quieter than the stock fan, on low speed i cant hear it, on top speed i can hear it but it loads quieter than the stock fan was, its my cpu fan thats the loudest now, and also the extra exhaust thing is adding noise, i might just take that back off if removing the thermal paste does the trick.

erm, a pea sized amount of grease is still too much, especially for a core the size of the X1900XT. You'll need more for a Athlon 64 or Northbridge/Southbridge (physically larger) but not for a small silicon core which is smaller than a postage stamp.

Ah. Indeed, that'll help. I've installed 3 gpus and a cpu heatsink with my tube and it's not even half way through. I tend to put 5 tiny dots like the dice face on the core then apply. No need to spread, the pressure will do the work.

jus took off loads of thermal paste, it looks like theres hardly anything on it now. but after the 1st test on 3dmark 2006 the temp was at 105! :S

i tried to take it all the paste off (it still looked abit 'dirty' and not shiny) and put on a lil spot of paste. its improved abit, after the 1st test in 3dmark it only goes to 88 but after like 5mins of COD2 it goes to 99 degrees.
How do i make sure that i take ALL of the old paste off? i only have a lil bit of paste left, i rekon enough for one last try.
