Do you think it would be better with just 1?

How do you think the market would be if there was only one company running the show.

How do you think things would be with just one Console in the running?

Would we be better off as gamers?

Would games be better?

One company/ Console = No competition

Games would get worse because developers would become lazy since they don't need to try anymore.

Would developers not all be level pegging, and try to out do eachother on quality, as the market will be purely from one source?

Not at all. It's when manufacturers like Sony or Microsoft pile money into Exclusive titles to make them better (i.e. Gears of War/Halo and Metal Gear Solid/Gran Turismo).

If there is no competition then there are no exclusives. Competition is what makes it great, Microsoft want more money than Sony and vice-versa, with no one pulling the strings you are very limited as to what you'll get.

Take EA for example they are probably the biggest publisher in the business and they don't try. They just feed us the same garbage year after year. Ubisoft is also getter bigger and bigger lets just hope they won't turn out the same.

But that implies that the exclusive titles, or the ones with all the money pumped into them, are the only good games out there.

One console wouldn't mean a monopoly at all. There would still be as many developers out there (more even, because they're all in one place) trying to get you to buy their games instead of the competition. And the company who owned the hardware would still be trying, because they'd still want as much money from software sales as they could. Look at the Game Boys. For years that was the only handheld worth having, and it's still had fantastic games on it.

What about the fact that some of the best games aren't driven by profit, but by imagination?

The only obvious way I can see a hardware monopoly being a bad thing is if it was a difficult system to program for, or that they'd probably charge the earth for accessories, because they know they could get away with it.

a monopoly would neither hurt nor help. Probably as the consumer you would benefit on some fronts due to only having one machine to buy. But as has been said, developers are individual companies, all of whom need to turn a tidy profit.

How can you sit and moan about EA being lazy churning out all the same garbage year on year? They only do that because the figures add up, moral or not it makes good business sense, and it will only last as long as the consumer allows, once people wake up and only buy better games, this will change. However when you look at the volume of people who watch the same things on Coronation St or Eastenders each day or those who lap up Big Brother 10 or "i'm a celebrity GMOOH!"

Them maybe we are some way off.

To be honest, I don't think there would be that much of a difference. Instead of the console makers making all the headlines with their lies and twisted truths, we would have solely game developers and publishers fighting with each other, trying to provide us with the best possible services and experiences. I'd hope we would have companies focusing their development time on other things, instead of worrying about months of coding to get the games running on 3 separate systems. It would be both good and bad, neither are ideal really.

They were a significant player in the arcades and home computing too, this was all in the hay day of video games.

err, they are still famous for being the biggest player in the arcades, home consoles and home computing in the hay day of video games.

I don't think having one console would be so bad. Has it hurt the handheld market when it was only Nintendo in it?

The key is that games are still a luxury. You don't have to buy them, so even if there was only the one console maker out there, they would still have to put a fair bit of effort in to get the sales.

However, it is nice to have competition. It doesn't have to be much, but some is nearly always good. Personally, I think two consoles is the sweet spot. I don't think there is room for 3.

hmm short term - one console = okay

long term - one console = what incentive to push the boundries of what is possible for £300-400 quid when your not competing?

do you really ythink we would be getting $800 dollar hardware for $500 if sony didnt have to compete with MS?

As much as i agree that there would be little change in terms of gameplay quality. Due to competition between publishers and developers.

The hardware side is a different matter. If there was only 1 console maker we would see it being priced at least in the realms of where the PS3 is and for a lower spec machine. The hardware company wouldn't be willing to take a loss on the consoles when it does'nt have too.

The only place you could go for cutting edge tech and graphics is the PC.
