How do you change it so that when you press shift and 3 you get a £ sign instead of #

From Wiki...
On UK Apple Mac keyboards, this is reversed, with the "£" symbol is on the number 3 key, typed using Shift+3, and the number sign ("#") being generated by Option+3. Under Microsoft Windows it can be generated through the Alt keycodes 0163 and 156, and in MS-DOS by Alt-156.

The Compose key sequence is 'L' and '-'.

What operating system are you running?

Start - Settings - Control Panel - Regional and Language Options -Languages Tab - Details - Settings Tab

Set 'Default input language' to 'English (UK)' and not 'English (US)'

Just in case you missed my sarcasm...

Well.. buying a mac is like buying a small island, making it look pretty then marketing it against England with the slogan "at least we don't have all the economic problems!". And it's true, you can go there, relax, paint a good picture... but if you want to actually get anywhere or do anything useful you'll have to go back to England and put up with the messy economy and hectic lifestyle, which only came about because a lot of people use it.
