Good Evening OcUK,

My girlfriend has just started to learn to drive, and against my better judgement I have agreed to add her to the insurance policy on our Ford Transit Van, as a vehicle to learn in, in addition to lessons.

Unfortunately it seems that the cheapest quote is in excess of a £1000, is this normal, or are we just looking in the wrong place? I ask because I don't remember insurance being this expensive when I was learning

Gocompare.com, make sure all the information is accurate to stay the right side of the law. Go for a 1.0, even over a 1.2 cos it makes that much difference. The transit is very optimistic if she has 0 no claims. In order to reduce any premium, make sure to choose a high voluntary excess and choose third party fire and theft over comprehensive.

1 final tip is...don't settle with the final price, that is only a quote, ring the cheapest quote provider up and bring em down by haggling.

Well if he is renewing his policy he can use what I have said as it is just like starting from scratch anyway, you dont have to stick with the same insurer.

Just no. Learning to drive in a Ford Transit van sounds like an absoultely terrible idea.

I'm surprised you've even getting quotes at all, let alone worrying about a high excess (which isn't all that high for a learner driver by the way) - I cannot imagine many commercial insurers wanting to take up that sort of risk!

Phone round, but unfortunately insurance is majorly expensive for new drivers.

Good idea though, if she can drive a transit, learn to to manouvers in it etc. Then it'll seem much easier in the little instructors car. I very highly doubt she'll be able to take her test in a transit though.
