Insurance frustration

Until the a large number of young drivers start to calm down a bit, cant see that happening any time soon though

Yup. Unfortunately, the statistics don't lie when it comes to young male drivers stacking it. Just look at how many young drivers on this forum have stacked their cars.

To be fair to those saying that fronting won't get caught; it's very unlikely he will indeed.

Step brother used to be insured on a chaved fiesta and then a chaved escort, and then a corsa, all of which were written off, 2 had claims against the fronted insurance, and there was absolutely no bother with it.

Make of that what you will.

I expect they'd be a bit more interested if he had crashed higher value cars.

BTW where's Merlin? He always used to be the insurance guru around here.

Probably would be; I don't expect the OPs to be particulary high value, seeing as it would be a first car.

There's a big distinction between a) what you can get away with b) what's legal and c) what's morally correct

Unfortunately, legitimately buying his own insurance policy is the only way the OP can satisfy all 3

Get an old (80's 90's) Fiat Panda 1litre super, it's group 1 insurance, and because it's a "super" you get wider 165mm wide tyres instead of biscuit tyres and a bodykit! ;) :p Still looks awful but they are rather fun for a 1 litre...

do the pass plus test, saved me over a grand on my first car, 1600 quid for a 1.1 fiesta, came down to 570 quid after doing the pass plus

I think savings like that are very unusual - it made sod all difference to me!

Worth doing some quotes with pass plus to see if it makes a difference though

I've been getting 2 quotes for most of them, one with and one without.

My Dad has said he is going to give me £300, and mumsy around £4-500. This'll take a nice chunk off. Meaning a 2200 quote will now be 1500 for me to pay, which I can do no problem. (I earn ~£500 a month... have been saving 150 a month for a car so I'm used to not having that money to spend anyway)

At anyone who has suggested fronting: I've tried looking into it, but to be honest I want the NCB, as I won't be driving when I ( Hopefully ) go to Uni, therefore will need all NCB I can get for when I am finished there.

(Also - The car will be under £1k)

I am just going to go with Admiral and pay off the £2300/£2400 they are asking for. It seems unlikely that i'm going to get it cheaper anywhere else.

Can't get a car until Monday still, work all weekend! :(

Seriously, try Bell if you already haven't.

Being a named driver with Bell for a year got me 1 years ncb with Bell/Admiral/Elephant which are still the cheapest for me now by hundreds.

Just add some random old women to a Bell policy, I have a female friend, my mum and an auntie. None of them would ever think twice of using my car, but they half my policy price.

Also limit the amount of miles you do, lower the "estimated" miles you intend to do, this will take a chunk out of the policy price. I don't do too many at all, well according to my clocks i havn't done any miles at all since last July.

Make sure they are old - my Mum drops my quote by £200, my girlfriend increases it by £100.

If you dont drive while at uni then your NCB could lapse and not be valid when you come back...?

I have my grandad on there with Admiral, including my stepdad ( 46 - 22yrs driving ) raises the premium. Mumsy doesn't drive, but i'll try adding my auntie later on!

I'm positive they don't have to be of any relation. It could be a friend of the family, a next door neighbor or even my Fox's mum. You should know plenty of women to add to the policy.

Oh come off it, i have known loads of people whom have had a whole array of accidents while fronting. Not one has ever seen a hint of bother.
Which is exactly why premiums for new drivers is so high...

Sheesh! £1900 for a VW Polo!!!!

I'm glad I'm well past my early driving years, I don't recall the costs being so high back then! (No old jokes pls....)

Makes £245 fully comp for me and the wife on the 330d look like a complete and utter steal!

Are you going FC or TPO/TPFT? I see no point you having comprehensive insurance at 17 on a car worth less than a grand as you'll have an excess the same as the GDP of a small 3rd world nation.
