Please can any of you insurance gurus help a brother out?

I crashed into a wall on 1/1/10. Reported it to the police who didn't really want to know; they were inundated with calls as it was new year and probably a whole bunch of drunks to deal with. Gave the residents of the council house my details. It is a social house for immigrants and they didn't speak english very well. They didn't even know what I did until I knocked their door. I'm hoping they lost my details and didn't report it to the council. The car was scrapped and I got a new car.

Anyway, I called Admiral today to find out if anyone had claimed yet and they said that nothing had come through so I had the case closed down. Good news for me because my insurance is coming up to renewal in August and I get to keep my NCB. Apparently, though, Lambeth have 3 years to make their claims. I'm just hoping they are as inept at this as they are at housing.

So what happens if I change insurance company and Lambeth make a claim two/three years down the line? What company would pay for the damage? What would happen to my NCB? The car doesn't even exist in my name anymore. Admiral didn't know the answer after putting me on hold for 10 minutes. They did say that they would probably contest the claim due to the accident being so long ago as they might be claiming for some damage that might not have been caused by me (weather, kids playing, don't know?).

The company that insured you at the time of the incident will pay the costs if a claim is made. Just because you've closed down the case with Admiral doesn't really prevent it being brought back. Admiral can choose to contest a late claim however they like.

In the event of a claim being successfully made, you may retrospectively lose your NCB. I'm certain your current insurer would be within their rights to increase your insurance premium to reflect that.

So even if I don't have an accident for the next 3 years (total 5 years NCB assuming I'm not a numpty again), I may lose all my NCB for something that happened in my second year?

you never loose all your NCB

just 2 years.

your 2 years would be deducted from whatever your current total at the time would be.

Ah not all bad then. Cheers guys.
Is it bad that I'm relying on NCB to decide whether I can afford to insure a nice car? :)

It will still be a maximum of 2 years NCB taken off me though so I can live with that. I think I'm just relying on NCB right now because I'm a newish driver. I'm sure length of driving experience will help drop the costs down too. That Nissan thread has me really jealous. He's paying on insurance what I'm paying on a fake Golf GTI! :(

they would probe in to the timescale of them claiming, personal injury claims are held open the longest, property damage are not open that long i believe.

claims for damages as a result of an injury has a statutory limitation of three years. damages for monetary losses is six years,
