Insurance on an R34 guesstimate?

I forgot to reply about ride comfort earlier. My current car has been rather fettled in the suspension area. Eibach Pro springs, Bilstein Yellow shocks (I forget the number), 1mm bigger rear torsion bars, solid mounts on the rear. The whole car is rather raw and raucous to be honest and I don’t mind this. I think whatever has been done to the Skyline in the ad it will not be as noisy / harsh on the road as my pug. Unfortunately for me whilst the suspension no the Pug worked amazing on track the conditions are roads are in don’t treat it kindly.

Thanks for the insight there Ianh. The main reason I am looking at this particular Skyline is due to the comprehensive modification list and the fact that all the work has been carried out by Abbey Motorsport. I wont be using mine for drifting, I just want a nice car with power on tap for when I want to exploit it. The car will not be driven hard for the majority of the time, you simply cannot drive a car with this kind of power hard on the road all the time anyway. It was the same when I had my Hayabusa, it was just nice having that grunt for those fun moments. It is a shame there have been so many claims against this type of car driving up insurance prices. It is sounding like it is likely that the quote will be in the four figure mark........

I quite like the style of the GTT, agreed the fat arches on the GTR do look good. Until I see the car in the flesh I cant comment on the GTR wheels but they look OK in the pics. I think being bright yellow is different enough! I think the bumper has been changed on the GTT I'm looking at, the vents on the side run 90degs to a standard one? I'm unsure which bumper it is though.

I was planning on having the oil changed every 3.5k - 4k miles and it serviced once a year. When you say oil service were you doing just the engine or the gearbox and I assume diff too? How many miles were you doing a year in yours? Even though I'm getting a quote based on 7.5k miles it is unlikely I'll go above 6k each year. I'd like to think I respect a vehicles limits. To be honest these days my limits end way before my vehicles. I've done trackdays on bikes and cars and never had any incidents. This said 400hp is a fair bit and will demand a decent amount of respect from the right foot. That is a nice looking Skyline you had there. Do the mirrors fold in at all on the Skyline? I was looking at one of your pics and wondering how it would? I might have issues getting it into my garage if the mirrors do not fold in 15 or so mm each.

i pay £500 FC on a 1991 R32 GTR (im 28, 7 yrs NCB, garaged.)

I also have a 2001 S2000.... and i'll tell you what, as monstrous as the GTR is to drive, the S2000 is a lot more fun.

Don't bother with a GTT, you'll always wish you went for a GTR.

Of the GTR's - the R32 is the most pure driving experience of them, so i'd be looking at getting an excellent R32 GTR if you're set on a skyline.

It's comments like these that explain why you should drive all other cars before settling on one.

Had a GTT for 3.5 years, loved every second of it. I bought it stock and tuned it up to 330bhp. Other than having to have the coil packs changed for some Splitfires, it was very reliable and plenty fast enough.

Those who haven't owned or even driven a GTT aren't really in a position to comment. Mike summed it up very accurately. Strangely enough this GTR/GTT/GTS one upmanship isn't really a problem within the Skyline community, it was always very friendly whatever you owned. It just seems like certain people like to hate from the sidelines.

First years insurance through Sky was £1500 by the last year it was down to £700.

That applies to the OP too though, how can one discount any car without driving it.

Errrm, very easily? I'm currently looking for a new car and I have discounted 99% of the different makes and models without looking at them, as they don't interest me. Doesn't mean I go on forums to tell everyone about it though.

Mine was lowered 30mm on springs (stock struts) and it was very comfortable, even for long distances. The Exhaust however hit peak resonance at 100mph and you had to shout to be heard. 70-80 was very "droney" but below that (or above 105mph) is was very quiet inside.

It's a good spec and Abbey are fantastic (if a little pricey). Rising Sun performance are closer to you in Ropley, Hampshire and are just as good and a tadge cheaper.

The Bumper is the stock Nissan one with a GTR splitter added. The side is stock although some have Nissan "sports" (not NISMO) sideskirts with a grill like mine and the rear bumper is stock (best looking rear IMHO).

The gearbox was only yearly, the diff was every 3 months (drifting abuses it TBH). A road car will only need gearbox/diff doing yearly. Mine was a daily driver so around 25000miles the 1st year (doing european tours etc) but settled to just under 8000 miles yearly after that.

I'd like to think I respect a vehicles limits. To be honest these days my limits end way before my vehicles. I've done trackdays on bikes and cars and never had any incidents. This said 400hp is a fair bit and will demand a decent amount of respect from the right foot.

I'm the same, I'd always rather have fun than break something trying to go 1mph faster or 1 sec quicker. On the road the power is very usable, there's traction control built in but the rear is very planted unless provoked on purpose. I only lost the backend on mine once in 5 years (gritted roundabout) when I was showing off and felt a right plank!

Stock ones do, I replaced those with Ganador CF ones which don't.

My "best" mod regardless of the engine stuff I did was bigger/better GTR brakes, braided lines + DOT5.1. It gave me so much more confidence driving and it's been my 1st Mod on every car since (even my current BMW 740 :D).

Hope that helps, if you can get a drive in any of the cars you listed it'd be good for you. I did exactly the same list and found the Evo too hard, the Scooby great (didn't like the exhaust noise ) and the M3 a bit too "normal" but everyone will have their own opinions and prefer each car differently.

I’m used to drone, the Peugeot is exactly the same albeit 70mph is a real drone, 80mph is quieter and 90mph is silent. Hit 100mph though and it howls insanely loud. I’ll take a look into Rising Sun seeing as they are closer. As long as they are as reputable as Abbey I’ll be happy to go to them with questions and for services.

I’m glad it is a standard bumper, I was starting to wonder why it may have been changed. Luckily for me the one I’m looking at already has GTR Brembo calipers and DS2500 pads fitted. I really like those pads, I have them all round on my Peugeot. They were awesome on track. Just have to keep on top of the dust.

So the quote is in……………………………………………..I am in shock to be honest…………………………..

All mods declared, like for like part replacement, fully comprehensive cover with a £350 excess

£750 for the year!!

Now to start calling around to see if I can get that down to £650 :D

Bloody hell! Buy it, buy it NOW :D!

I had R33 calipers (black not red like the R34, a bit more subtle) and DS2500's (see what I mean about it's the Spec I would have chosen :D) and they were fantastic.

While the Rising Sun website is old the company (run by Richard) did all my work when both Abbey and Rod Bell (both Skyline legends) said it'd be too difficult to stick the older R33 GTR engine into the R34 (different looms etc) and they've done 600hp+ GTT's on the RB25 engine, although I'll be honest and say I've been out the scene for 2 years so things may have changed (I hope not).

Unless you prefer the R34 shape, then you're spending 25K+ for a GTR. Although having had both engines I do prefer a tuned RB26.

But do you like the R34 shape to the extent of £19k more? You can get an immaculate R32 GTR for £6000, I personally think the R34 looks bloated and ugly, whereas the R32 looks lean and mean.

But lets be honest, no Skyline is a pretty car.... you don't buy them to pull birds in!

Thats where an S2000 comes in :D :D

Here's mine :

So why did you say that people can't comment on the GTT? By saying the GTR is better they're doing no different than the OP and you are by simply discounting other cars without driving them.

The OP is discounting them based on personal preference, which as a buyer, is his prerogative as he will ultimately be paying for them. Discounting cars during a discussion simply because you, a third party have an irrational dislike of them is not really helpful to the topic at hand.

Rather than ignore those comments I'd say he should decide for himself.

I'm going on like a broken record here so I'll stop. :)

The running man the quote was run through skyinsurance who specialise in imports and modified cards. It was recommended to be by someone where I work who has a tuned Nissan Pulsar. He keeps trying to convince me to get a Pulsar but they just don’t look right to me.

Myself I like the chunky look of the R34, I can’t explain why I just do. The R33 isn’t bad either but I’m not a fan of the R32 shape I’m afraid. It is each to their own when it comes to what people like and don’t like. I don’t need to pull girls as I have a g/f however I emailed her the link earlier and it’s not to her liking. Doesn’t like the colour, says it looks like a car a spotty teenager would drive etc etc. I had to remind her that I’m currently driving a Peugeot 306 gti-6 with a free flowing exhaust!! I want a car with character that has a decent amount of grunt and stands out from the crowd. I think that a bright yellow R34 does that quite well :D

No need to aruge about what is best / better. Each to their own on this front too. To be honest I like all of the cars in the list, I'd love to be able to own one of each for a year. I appreciate them all for what they are and the different characteristics they will have but simply think the Skyline is ticking all of the boxes I want to tick off at the moment :D
