Hi OcUK, got a question that you will hopefully answer for me please?

Car A = Current car.
Car B = New car.

Now, I currently have a month left on my insurance for Car A in which I've recieved a renewal quote with my NCD. Now the quote is stupidly higher than competitors so wil be leaving them anyway.

Now comes to the point. I've bought Car B - thats currently sat on the drive. To switch it over to my current insurer woud be £100 for the last month, stupid fees.

Car A is going to my brother who's needing it ASAP for work, etc...

So, could I technically insure Car B on a new policy using my NCD from current policy and just letting that lapse, or is it the case that I need start my new policy from when my current one ends to use my NCD?

I ask because I will be out of pocket switching over then having to pay a deposit from one months pay.

Hope I make sense.

Cheers.

You can't use your no claims discount until you have it through and the previous policy is finished. And if you cancel your car A policy, even after 11 months, you lose the whole year.

I'm guessing YOU need a car just as much as your brother? Personally, I'd keep car B parked up until your current policy expires, and continue to use Car A until this time. Then simply start a new policy on Car B.

It is also worth noting that you cannot have 2 policies on the one car at the same time. So you couldn't keep your policy running on car A (to keep your NCD), whilst your brother takes his own policy out on the same car. This would be a conflict of insurance interests, and can get very messy if there was a claim.

You COULD try calling up an insurance company, and see if they can do anything for you, like honour the NCD from your current renewal, even if you cancel it straight away. But I wouldn't be holding my breath for the answer your looking for.

Not true. There is nothing in law, or in any insurers terms and conditions that I've ever seen to prevent 2 policies on the same vehicle. It could present issues in the event of a claim, simply because the insurers wouldn't want you to claim twice and would want to check this, but if there is a transfer of ownership this isn't going to be an issue.

Each car must be either insured or SORN'd, if you want to use both on the road they must both be insured separately (Or listed on a mult-icar policy). You can only use your NCD on one car at a time.

Probably best to chat to an insurance broker.

Andi.

Oh well, this is what I was told by an insurance company when trying to do EXACTLY what the OP might try. Keeping my insurance policy running for a few weeks until the end to get the NCD, while a family member insured it themselves. In the end, I just stored the new car until the old cars policy ended and told the family member they would have to wait.

Yeah. I gathered that's what I would have to do. Shame. You'd think after fully paying off the insurance that they would honour the NCD, although I've not asked my insurer yet.

Will give them a call tomorrow and see if it's something I could do. If not then 3 - 4 weeks won't hurt.

It depends on when your new insurer will want you to prove your ncd bonus. If say they give you a 4 week allowance just setup a policy on the new car with your NCD at the renewal of your old, as long as you get proof to them before their end date you'll be fine. Ask your current insurer if they will email you a copy of it once it expires and make sure the new insurer accepts email proof, most do now anyway.

So in short keep car A going as normal and get your brother to insure it or temporarily add him as a named driver to yours. Insure car B as if it was your renewal date. Make sure proof of NCD is there before their deadline, bare in mind most say within 2 weeks but usually give up to 28 days.

The only issue if your brother insures the car you'll most likely need to register the car in his name within 30 days.
