I am currently getting car insurance quotes for my wife but I own the car and I am the registered keeper.
Her insurance quotes go up by approx £130 with adding me as a named driver as I had an accident in December 2014.

I currently have my own insurance on another vehicle and am covered to drive any other vehicle as long as it's not owned by me.

Is it Okay to sell the car to my wife and make her the registered keeper so that we both have separate policies but I can still drive her car (on my insurance)

FYI - I very rarely drive my wifes car but need to be able to on occasion (such as MOT time or driving back from the pub after a meal if she had a drink and I didn't)

Most insurance companies are suspicious of the main driver not being the owner/registered keeper of the vehicle so i suspect you will have no pronlem re-registering the vehicle in her name and applying for insurance. Bear in mind that your insurance will only cover you for 3rd party loss on another vehicle.

My wife and I alternate who is the policy holder to allow us to keep NCB active, the car is registered in her name and we've never had any issues / problems / questions / suspiciousness from insurance companies.

Same. All the car in my household are registered to me, but there is never a problem with any car being insured under her name.

We also swap the insurer yearly on one of the cars to keep another set of NCD going just in case.

Nope as the car will need to be registered at a different address. Father in law looked into this. He can drive mine but can't drive my mother in laws even though she is owner and registered keeper

You won't need register the car in her name because you're married and therefore insurable interest exists.

I've never heard of driving other vehicles tpo excluding other vehicles registered at the same address.

I've sorted it today.
Sold the car to the wife so transferring ownership to her and she is now the registered keeper. Saved me £100.

There's lots of weird clauses in policies like this, last year I was allowed to drive anything on my insurance except a 'race car' and my partners car. I didn't realise the second part and spent the year driving her car on occasions anyway  I only noticed this clause when it came to renew, I asked why they had this silly policy and the guy on the phone said in all honesty it was to encourage multicar policies as you would most likely want to drive your other half's car above any other. They would allow you to drive each others cars on a multicar policy. Sneaky.

What car is it? Not that it makes a difference now, but will the extra owner have an impact when it comes to resell?

Seems like a pointless move - the registered keeper doesnt affect insurance. They want to know who the keeper is, but you just have to tell them. The wording of the insurance around DOC is who the vehicle is OWNED by and the V5c clearly states that it has nothing to do with ownership. You would have just needed to tell the insurer that you're the registered keeper but your wife is the legal owner and the main driver.

I clarified with my own insurance - they state on the paperwork that for me to drive another car 3rd party only it must not be owned by me and not registered to me.
I did a webchat with aviva and saved it.
