Hi all

I am selling my car and as such not renewing my insurance policy. Under my policy I could drive our other car fully comp but since I am cancelling that policy that will no longer apply. I am a named driver on my wife's policy but that only extends me 3rd party as far as I am aware. We are going to call her insurer and see what options they have for us but until then I thought I would ask on here what the best option is usually in cases like this?

1 car, 2 drivers who both need fully comp as we each drive the car about the same amount. Bonus would be the ability to drive other cars in at least a 3rd party capacity.

Is it just a case of each of us taking out a policy on the car? Or purely down to the insurer so speak to them and see what they can do?

Thanks!

I'm not sure if you could take out a policy each on the same car, that could be open to abuse and problems, such as which insurance company would pay for damages/fire/theft.

I think your only choice would be seeing if the insurance company will cover you fully comp as a named driver, otherwise it'll mean you're just a named driver with no ability to drive another car under the same policy.

If you're a named driver from what I understand you should be covered to the same level she is, i.e. at fully comp if the policy is fully comp.
She may have cover to drive another car TP only but you would not be covered to do so.
If you need to drive other cars you can always take out a policy through Cuvva or similar to cover you for however long you need cover for.

The insurance company will have all the definite details though, so you should speak to them (and/or check your insurance docs)

This would normally be the other way around - your policy with DOC would typically give third party cover, you being a named driver on the comprehensive policy would mean you and the policyholder had the comprehensive cover.

Probably worth checking the documents but I suspect your wife's policy already provides the level of cover you need.

As akaFonzie mentions though, on a single policy it's probably unlikely a named driver gets DOC benefits, that would be limited to the policyholder.

Thanks for all the info. I'll get my wife to call up her insurer and pose the questions. I would think this is a fairly common scenario so I am probably overthinking it and as you say, already have the appropriate cover!
