Insurance that doesn't start when you buy it?

So I've recently moved into a new flat and for the first time needed contents insurance (made a thread about this here too!). As well as that I decided to insure my phone just to get everything done at the same time in one fell swoop.

Unfortunately I actually dropped my phone and broke it a week later (this was last Friday) and I've now just found out (almost a week after raising the initial claim) that the phone isn't covered for the first 14 days of the insurance (I'd had it for 7 days). Err, what? I know I'm at fault for not reading the 50 pages of small print drivel but I was pretty sure all insurance started as soon as you take out the policy? Plus it's not like I planned on breaking it so I probably would have bought the insurance even if I had read that clause.

Is this normal?!

Bumders!

Yes, or at least it seems to be the case with posessions/gadgetry. My laptop isn't insured for the first 14 days. Can't think why?

Yeah I've seen that on a couple of devices I've bought insurance for in the past.

I'm not suggesting you act fraudulently, but you could wait another 7 days or so before making contact...

*EDIT*

Ahh, you've already made a claim. In that case, I don't know where you would stand :(

Are you saying you have mobile phone insurance external to contents insurance? Would it be covered under contents insurance if that was the case? Some banks will have mobile phone insurance thrown in, may be worth checking that also?

I've already raised the claim for me dropping it and breaking it, but surely I can still break it more (it still works, just not the screen) or lose it...?

It might be cheaper for you to just get the screen replaced. It's possible to do it your self, or there will be a shop local to you which will do it.

Think it's a little trickier than that else I'd have probably done that rather than claiming. I dropped it on the corner and the screen itself is completely intact, looks fine visibly, but doesn't turn on sometimes and when it does (with some very hard squeezing and bending of the case) it shows lines all down it, so it's more the circuit board/a connection than just the glass.

I smashed my tv the day my insurance started a few years ago. Luckily that clause wasn't included, they compensated me more than I'd paid for the tv :D

To stop fraudulent claims basically, stops them breaking their phone then taking out insurance to claim a new one for a £50 excess replacement.

Harsh seeing as it's genuinely happened, and if you've told them you have no chance of making a claim as they'd have noted it down. :(

id expect so bu less often, or perhaps as it's in the small print a lot wont even know about it, so this way they get someone to sign up thinking i'll wait a few days, they then report and insurance company says it's not covered until 14 days and bam they've got a new customer and the scamme gets scammed

Bit pointless though, if you were determined to defraud them you could just wait three weeks and say it broke.

Indeed. I swapped my seperate insurance to be part of my bank account insurance. The excess is now £50 so I put off claiming for a small crack at the top of my screen, then the lock/unlock/power button broke but I decided I'd use the camera button to unlock and my charger to turn it on.....now I've cracked the whole screen to **** but it still works.

I'll claim it in January now as I'm getting a new phone next week.

I'd give it time and put a hammer through it :o

I added my iPhone to bank account insurance, it said it won't be covered until after 14 days so must be common thing perhaps.
