Insurance - what am I doing wrong?

bit off topic but apparently you get more money off saying your car is on a driveway then a garage. other than that, what insurance companies you using to get quotes from ?

I'm afraid to say, the critical mistake you're making is your age.

Try adding a parent as a named driver, also add another girl etc, all good (Legal) tips, oh and see the sticky for insurance info.

Milage down as low as you can sensibly lower it (its an "estimate") ;)

Not sure on the whole adding parents/old friends thing, it always increased my premium.

Shop around, by telephoning people. Online quotes are never as low as you can get on the phone.

EDIT: I assume you are putting "student" down as your occupation, that never helps.

Adding your parents to your policy is just going to increase the cost. It only works the other way round.

As to lowering the price - simply wait, at present you are an only marginally acceptable risk. Knocking down a ped will cast them £1m+ and too many 17 year olds in their own cars wrap the wound lampost

Have you tried a diesel car? My brother was struggling to get reasonable insurance quotes on small engined petrol cars, so he tried a 306 diesel and it come back a lot cheaper. Probably not your ideal car but if you want to get on the driving ladder.

You're 17, so you are automatically a babykiller.

What group is the micra? A 1.0 engine doesn't mean it is the lowest group.

Also where have you tried?

Really.....

Lets think:

17 year old insures car only him on the policy he will be driving it 100% of the time.

17 Year old insures a car as himself and adds his 47 year old dad to the policy who will be driving the car sometime.

Now tell me who is more likely to crash, the 17 year old or the 47 year old?

Now tell me which insurance policy will be cheaper.

Yes you guessed it, adding an on older driver reduces the overall risk on the policy so will bring the price down.

*Note this doesn't work with all insurance firms.

Have a look at a 0.8 matiz, i don't think you get much smaller :D
Phone around is always a good one, i shaved £200 off my M5 insurance when I phoned around.

my nephew is only 17 and gets a polo, 1.4 cl for £1300 a year so i reckon you must be able to get around that kind of price if you phone around. having tpft over fully comp shaves some off to i imagine.

That isn't true, I have added my mother to my policy in the past which lowered my premium substantially at the time.

Depends on the company. If I put student down in someone like Endsleigh then they actually make it cheaper as they are linked with Student Unions etc. But other companies certainly don't like me as a student...but then they may just not like me, as I've never checked without putting student down. :)
