Does anyone insure their kit? I'm thinking insurance from loss/breakages rather than liability. Photo Guard seem to be quite popular, but has anyone actually had the misfortune to make a claim from them? You can't normally tell if an insurance is worth paying for until you need to make a claim and see whether they try and weasel out of it.

I had Photoguard but, as my kit expanded, they started getting rather expensive.

When my home contents insurance was up for renewal last October, I made sure I went with someone who offered decent cover for my gear and cancelled the Photoguard policy.

Most contents insurance will cover you for stuff out of the home, just make sure the total is enough, any items over their specified amount are listed and any 'gotchas' like stuff being left in a car etc.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend using house insurance for this - having been in the situation where I've had to claim on my house insurance, I know how they subsequently hike your premium up and nobody else will touch you if you've made a claim in the last few years.

Cover I get with my house hold insurance £8000, accidental damage, vehicle covered and worldwide cover costs £48 a month or £512 a year on photoguard with an excess.

Even if I made a claim this year my premium next year will not go up half of £512 a year that I will pay photoguard. I know this because I ran the figures with the insurance company when I took out my house and contents insurance.

Of course if I was making a living with my gear I'd go with them. :)

When I claimed on mine it went up approx. £600 a year and nobody else would even give me a quote for 2 years, most wouldn't quote for less than 3 years no claims.

For things that there's a reasonable chance you might claim on it's well worth keeping it separate imo - hence the question :)

I was looking to do this also, E&L insurance seems to be well priced but I'm not sure if there are any catches in the small print.. Anyone use them ?

I'm with E&L but haven't had to make a claim. Looking at some of their other insurance (pets etc) they do appear to have a habit of trying to get out of paying. Was supposed to change last year but my due date coincided with a holiday where i was taking my camera so for least hassle i stuck with them. Will change this year though.

There was one part that stood out when I looked and it was:

Theft from any vehicle unless Forcible and violent Entry or exit Was used causing substantial damage at point of entry...

No idea what that meant but I read it that if they broke into your car and stole the equipment it wasnt covered which made no sense, I must read it again but was enough to stop me hitting the buy button..

I'm with E&L and have the in-car cover as an extra. Even then, it has to be in a lockable boot with no access from inside the car, so will exclude hatchbacks or anything with a folding rear seat. I think that's not unusual though, I seem to remember similar exclusions with other policies I checked out.

I've never had to claim for my photo gear, but my wife insured her horses and saddles with E&L for years. She claimed twice in about 8 years and both times she was paid out quickly and the amount she was expecting with no hassle.

E&L are a huge insurer, so I guess they generate a fair share of complaints/bad experiences, but without knowing the percentage of complainants to customers, it's hard to say if they're better or worse than any other insurer in that regard.

I think i read it's e&l that have a bad rep for having daft terms and or do their best not to pay out.

I'm sure if you search over on tp youll find what I think I'm talking about lol. Also over on tp there is a review thread of photoguard during a claim process.

I forget what we're paying a month with photoguard, I think it's 65/month for pro cover for me and the other half with European cover, in car and about 10k insurance value.
