Insuring a test drive

Out of interest, what's to special about it?

Perhaps special isn't the word when talking to another RX owner, but enough so to mean driving a standard one isn't really a good indication.

PZ Suspension, Toyo Cat Back, Remap + 10K rev limit, Mazda Speed wheels.

It isn't, frankly. The real answer to this question is 'There is nothing you can do'.

Can you not insure it but state that you are not the registered keeper/owner? I know most sites ask this and you can still get quotes, so figure this may be a perfectly safe way round it if something were to happen.

So pretty much the same as a standard RX8 PZ then? Just find one of those to test drive.

There is one way.
Go to http://www.hpicheck.com/
Buy a HPI check for £19.99.
With the HPI certificate, you also get a code which entitles you to 1 week fully comprehensive cover with Aviva on the HPI checked car.

So that's effectively £19.99 for a week's comprehensive cover and a free HPI check (which you should be doing anyway).

Driveaway is an insurance product from Aviva that entitles you to free 7 days comprehensive insurance when you do an HPI Check and then go onto purchase the vehicle.

HPI way sounds like a decent, their on the cover restrictions don't shaft him on the car so unless there is something particularly nasty that restricts him.

The wording is "once you bought your car" so they might ask for proof of purchase? You could "buy" the car and get proof then decide to return it, assuming they dont want V5C proof that is!

That would involve travelling, including £60 to get off this ****ing Island.

Not only that, I bet Aviva won't insure people under 25 on an RX8 so the driveaway cover won't apply.

When they were Norwich Union, they had restrictions for under 21s, but I never managed to find a car that required you to be 25.

Have you tried the more specialist performance insurers? It might be worth trying an insurer that advertises on an owners club forum, for example. Or perhaps ask advice from an owners club theselves?

This has turned into a dogs dinner, any RX8 is going to tell you if you like them or not surely?

Also 60 quid in the greater scheme of things isnt too terrible is it?

Turned into? It's been one from the start.

IMHO he has no idea what he wants, only that it must be more affordable than his ST.

But why travel to test a standard one, when then one I want to buy is local?

I know what I want, I want a 330 Sport in Imola Red with Red Leather Electric Memory Seats, 16:9 Nav, Bluetooth, Aluminium Dash Trim, with less than 80k on the clock and 1 Previous owner.

Whilst I'm not anal enough to demand this exact spec, I'm finding it hard to find a decent 330 at all, let alone one even remotely close to the spec I want.

An RX8 is just as acceptable a car as a 330 that doesn't quite meet my requirements, is higher in numbers, and I happen to know one for sale with the right bits bolted on, at a decent price, locally, by someone I know.

This is what's wrong with car insurance in the UK.
If cars were insured rather than the drivers, you can drive whatever you want as long as the owner's insurance covers you, which almost always does with those policies.

A return crossing with a car shouldn't cost you that much. Besides you could go over as a foot passenger and get a test drive in a standard one that would cost you less than a day's insurance.

Assuming there is one for sale, at a dealer, within walking distance from Portsmouth Hard or Southampton docks? Even as a foot passenger, I'd expect it to cost me at least £25 for the two of us.

I know exactly what it costs to get off this Island I've lived on all my life, thanks :)

If it's someone you know have a word and see if you can have a go in an empty car park at 11PM on a Sunday or something, not legal but you're not gonna crash and then get them to give you a proper passenger ride.

Ooh yes, an empty carpark, just the place to get a feel for whether a particular performance sports car is right for you.
