Hey all,

Currently own a Clio which when bought I was told it was a cat D write off,

Now I am currently taking lessons and when I pass my test was hoping to get insured without any problems, got a few quotes online and the cheapest I could find was with Morethan at £1400 3rd party fire and theft.

Now my question is none of these online quotes ask if the car is a write off and I just presumed they already know and charge more to insure it but I have been told you must ring them and tell them. Now where would I stand if I just insured it online and came to make a claim because at the end of the day I bet a lot of people buy cars not knowing they are written off.

Does anyone else have any expierence with this and/or have made a claim in a similar situation.

Any help would be great,

Thanks, Sam

As long as its MOTd and had any post-write-off tests that need doing its fine mate. At the end of the day the as long as it is roadworthy and has MOT then the insurance is more about you, your ability to drive etc etc etc anyway.

If you look through your insurance companies T&Cs you will probably find it is not even mentioned!

I'd expect them to know but try a quote for the same thing but dont give them a reg - if its cheaper then you'll know.

Insurance isnt worth taking risks with IMO, get the quote reference, phone them to clarify and take the policy out over the phone

Edit - alllec makes a good point, they probably dont even care - you're the risk, not the car. Still worth checking with them though

You dont need any tests for a CatD, just an MOT the same as any other car. Insurance is unaffected.

CAT D doesnt need a VIC test, only CAT C does, insurance company doesnt give a damn. But it wil affect any payout if you have a crash and the car is deemed a write off again, it will be valued less than an equivalent non CAT D car.Just something to bear in mind if you werent aware of it already.

Thanks for the replys!

Really put my mind to rest as I am hoping to drive my little clio the day I pass without any last minute issues you see...

The car itself has a full MOT till April 2010 so should be fine :)

The car was written off 2 years ago apparantly, it passed an MOT earlier this year.

Should be fine yes?

Considering that it's your insurer who writes a car off, then there is going to be no need to call them and let them know.

If you have a monumental crash involving no damage to 3rd parties property, and you repair it yourself, then the car has never been a write off.

My current car was CAT D'd after being rear ended with a previous owner, then repaired. Extent of the damage was a broken rear window, a broken rear bumper, and some crumpling to the very back of the boot floor. I have never been asked if it was a wite off, and if they do check this themselves, I've always been able to get very good quotes considering my age and the car.
