Hi, my brother is looking at buying a second car for the weekends and that. Something quite sporty like an Audi TT or VX220. He drives a 2.0TD Suzuki Grand Vitara at the moment which he really wants to keep to take to work and that.

What is the best way to insure a second car? Am I right in saying that you can't use your no claims bonus for a second policy?

Thanks

Matt

you are correct.

NCD belongs to a policy and offically you can't even split or transfer it to another person. Having said that some brokers will do this, I would phone around to find somewhere that will split the NCD.

look for limited mileage, no commuting. these should drop the quotes a bit. make sure your NCD is working for you, put it where you will save the most money. You might need to do a change of vehicle on one policy to get the vitara subbed for the sports car, and then insure the vitara on a new policy.

Financially his best option is to sell the Vitara and use the TT/whatever as a daily driver - the good thing about something like a TT is that its a perfectable usable daily car, perhaps not with the VX, but certainly with the TT.

It will cost more to run, but the money you get from a) Selling the Vitara and b) Not having to pay for two lots of insurance/MOT/tax will more than balance this out.

Right, here's how I do it cheapest: Vespa as main vehicle £160, business calls etc, the works. Named driver on girlfriend's Renault £30 extra. Tuned up Anglia as second car on a non-no-claims policy approx £150 TPFT limited to 5000 miles.

Thanks for the help guys it's much appreciated. He can't buy a new car until he's 25 in April as there is no one over here that will insure him on the cars he's looking at so he's got a few months to decide what to do. Chances are he'll sell the Vitara as it is just a year old this month and so wouldn't have to add much more to get a deacent TT/VX220. If he were to keep the vitara and take out a new policy for the sports car he's looking at £3-4k to insure it which is just not worth it. The cheapest quote i've found so far is £1480 for the 2.2ltr VX220 and £2060 for the 1.8T (225) TT using his 6NCB which to me doesn't sound to bad.

my broker gave me 5 years introductory no claims discount when i took out a second policy

phone around :)

yup on the direct line thing, i got a leaflet included with my new certificate saying that they now a) let u use your discount on a second car (im sure theres probably some link to the original ncd so both get cancelled if you crash and lockin to stop you taking it to another insurer) and b) they'll now give ncd to named drivers when they take out their own policy
