Been looking quite closely into buying one of these as a next car,

I would ask over at the DC2 forums, but they are a bit biased :p
IIRC we have one or two owners on here? How are you finding the car for everyday use
and in general?

Performance isn't to be sniffed at, 187Bhp and 60 in ~6.5 according to parkers.
Handling is regarded as being top notch.

I'm not quite sure what colour to go for, black looks great but suffers from swirl marks
(these could be removed with time and money), white stands out the most to non car buffs
and red looks fab when clean.

My budget would be ~£7-8K, depending on whether I can sell my current
car for ~1K. I've had a few insurance quotes, KwikFit being the best at £1300 FC @ 20yrs old and 2yrs NCB.
What are peoples thoughts on this car, what other options are there for
the budget that are reliable, decent on fuel and handle well? Would a
Clio Cup be held in the same regard?

Neil.

I've been looking at a DC2 for quite some time now and am now planning on getting one around either christmas time or next summer.
A mate of mine has a jap imported DC2 and the guy living above me has the UK model. The jap one looks far better and is faster thanks to a better manifold. For 7k you could get an absolute mint condition car, even more so if imported. Just depends on insurance costs for the imported model.
Either way you get an amazing handling FWD car thats easy to service, doesn't drink fuel when your not gunning it hard, has a lovely interior and is very quick of the mark.

As for colour, you are right, white stands out most to the none car folks but I think red by far looks the best.

£1300 is the max I would be willing to spend on insurance
AFAIK imports cost more to insure and the UK model is fast
enough for me as I'll be coming from a car that takes ~18s
to 60 :p

*edit* Anyway, I'm looking forward to lots of

Now that's just plain insulting :p

Anyway, great cars - well screwed together, relatively cheap to run, relatively cheap to fix - not that they break anyway. Handling of course is superb. Downside - bit of a rough ride, bit of noise too - 5 forward gears so dont expect it to cruise on the motorway at 85mph with just a whisper from the engine - it dont work out like that.

Vtec engine of course like a drink of oil now and again - you have to check it once a week without fail.

Because it's so lightweight - it doesn't appear to munch tyres so thats another bonus. Choose tyres wisely though - it's sensitive. RE010's best bet - I'm using them on the DC5. 040's are downright dangerous. Think Honda specifiy 010's on the DC2 anyway.

Plenty of aftermarket goodies on offer. Engine takes to FI well too.

In a nutshell - it's a drivers cars. 190bhp rollerskate. Never going to set the world alight in a straight line but drag racing is gay anyway.

Owned one a coulpe of years ago for two years.....

and.....

A definate yes, anyone who can should purchase this car at somepoint in their life. The vtec is very addicitive, and with a exhaust and a filter it tranforms the car sound wise, and help achive a coulpe ore bhp.

Nothing much to say about the handling but I've only ever been matched on track by westfields and elises and the guys had great feedback from when they had a go.

Brakes need to be sorted via some DS2500 pads and a change of DOT 4 fluid.

Interior is very nice for what the car is, it pretty noisy but I love that. Seat are very nice, watch out for sidebolster that have had better days, but can be replaced with new ones.

Colour wise, black is by far the best BUT one of the reasons I ended up selling the car when I did was the quality of the paint. It's pretty bad, orange peel and thin paint is a big worry. But I spent vast amounts of time washing and detailing my cars so the paint always looked a wet deep black which always got comments off people how good it looked!

Any questions please ask away

I used to have a dc2.

Ride was poor (doesnt like any bumps, at all) and build quality wasnt that great in my opinion. Reliable yes, but not up to what I expected in terms of finish.

The engine is amazing, really good fun... but... can be a bad thing.

The car made me frustrated as i could never use it the way it was intended.

Car is pretty pointless in anything but good weather.

Overall:

Car Good, Engine Amazing, Sold within a few Months

Pretty surprised by that comment. I had a passenger ride in a friends DC2 in what can only be described as torrential rain and he was still chucking it round the roundabouts and it was still sticking really well and seemed very adjustable when he needed to back off a bit. Maybe he was just very lucky

check the prelude as an alternative, the 2.2VTEC is not that much slower in a straight line nor handling wise.

Its more comfortable, has more toys and has a torquier engine - advantage is that they are easily half the price of an ITR!

pretty much the opinion of my CTR, hence why im selling after a few months too.

Cheers guys for the comments.

Randell yours looked stunning, black is highly tempting. I guess I'll
have to go see one in person. I've only seen white and red up close.

As for the Prelude, not really my cup of tea looks wise.

I would also seriously consider this car, great handling, decent engine and performance.

I found this on certain tyres, but onec I had some Re010's and S02 the handling in the wet was awsome and very confident.

To be honest, I can put up with the ride if its crashy, my mums 205 GTi can be crashy over bumps. As for the build quality, I've currently got a French car that rattles and squeaks when standing still, so no worries there :p

I havent had a DC2 type R, but Ive had a Civic VTi so heres my 2p based on that:

Good points:

Ultra reliability
Excellent performance & handling
Looks
Residuals

Bad points:

Appeals to hardcore drivers only
Motorway driving (very low final drive, noisy, not economical)
Standard security/theft issue
VTEC makes you want quiet roads to scream through the gears - sadly, there never is any these days! :p

So yeah, basically i agree with Axeboy and James
