After running insurance quotes for all the prospective cars I was looking at, the 3 hondas seem the best price Vs speed.
I looked at and ruled out
200SX - Just too ugly from the back
Impreza UK turbo - Silly Insurance
Octavia VRS - Insurance was OKish, just not too sure if I like the all round package.

So, with 5k to spend which would you choose?

Integra Type-R will cost all of the 5k
VTI-S seems to be around 4k so I have some money left over
Prelude VTI with motegi bodykit costs around 3.5k so I have even more money left over.

Is the teg worth the extra money? The car will mostly just be used as a play thing since I nolonger have to do any long motorway driving. Can owners of each please comment on how you find said car.
Thanks

I would say go for an Integra, but if you could get a decent VTI-S (i.e. looked after, properly serviced, without hammered suspension, air con has been re-gassed, either aftermarket alloys or alloys have been refurb'd) then they are good cars IMO.

I have both a VTI and a integra,

You really need to decide what you want from it. I love my teg, its great for blasting about the B roads but is slightly harder to live with on long distances, that could just be me as i have a big rear end and the seats are kinda tight

If i did a lot of motorway miles I would probable go for the VTI. Its got all the toys and is such a comfy car over long distances. Although im sure the lude is also great at this. The VTI also handles well although it is on the soft side.

Also if your a big lad try a lude first. I found that even with the seat right back my legs rub on the stearing wheel (was a 4th gen) and was the only reason i didnt go for the car. It handled well and was a nice car.

But you have answered it yourself.

Plaything = teg

Test the ITR before you buy.

£5k will get you a high mileage uk car or an early import... i prefer the look of the import.

They are an aquired taste though, im not convinced and only kept my DC2 for a few months. Engine wise it was a marvel of japanese trickery, but the handling wasnt up to my expectations.

Also, on todays roads, i found the high revving vtec pointless 80% of the time.... it was frustrating.

Good car, but try before you buy.

ITR but as said, it's no motorway muncher, DC2 has the 5 speed box.

Furthermore it doesn't like lumpy/bumpy roads. ITR's are set up for smooth surfaces.

Lumpy country lanes need to be taken at the speed limit otherwise you'll be off into a hedge. I've chased a Saxo down some country lanes in mine (which is a bit softer than the DC2) and lost. It's just not cut out for uneven roads.

www.itr-dc2.com for all things DC2 Integra - Don't post this question their directly or you'll get thrown off for trolling :D (not reallly, do a search though it's been asked many times especially ITR vs Lude).

I'm sure there'll be someone up in Edinburgh who'll take you out in a good one so that you'll know what you're looking for if you decide to go shopping, the car is getting to an age where there are a fair few dogs out there now.

£5k is as Axeboy says Import '96 money or high-miler UK, there are two major differences the looks obviously and the '96 has rather worse brakes. It'll also cost more to insure being an import (grp20 vs grp18).

High miler issues:
1) FHSH and the engine should be fine.
2) Cambelt is 60k (for a 98 UK) so could be due again ~ £200.
3) Clutches tend to last ~60k - so ask when was it last done - £400 for a new one fitted (Don't pay honda to do this ;) ).
4) 5th gear synchros, talked about more than it seems to happen but it's a big bill if you get the problem £800 if you get Honda to fix it (~£500 if you have a local specialist).
5) Suspension, the ITR suspension has an absurd number of rubber bushes in it - these, as well as shocks&springs, do need replacing at times and failing to do so will adversely affect the handling - this is one area where a lot of tegs are neglected as the get on a bit.

Other issues:
1) Naff wheels - 17" wheeels will damage the handling.
2) The wrong tyres - Not neccersarily even cheap tyres, the wrong tyres will make a teg handle like a jelly! Look for a car with the standard RE010's as a frame of reference (They're only £60 a corner anyway). Notably Toyo T1-R/S are shocking on the teg.

Also if the Octavia VRS is on your list, the Accord Type-R should be ;)

My vote would be for the prelude, its the best all round package imo if you dont need 4 doors, although if you want purely a plaything try the teg aswell. There different enough to warrent testing both.

I wouldnt have the octavia, all that extra turbo grunt is absorbed by the extra weight, and in comparison to a prelude/integra it feels slow, heavy and unresponsive.
